Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

Three weeks later, the sprawling Westchester estate was completely empty. The courts had seized the property pending the criminal trial, freezing all of Eleanor's assets and placing the corporate trusts into receivership until a court-appointed administrator could untangle decades of financial manipulation.

We hadn't looked back once.

We had packed up our lives, moved permanently into the quiet, sunlit brownstone in Cold Spring, and started over. The physical scars on Chloe’s brow had begun to fade into a thin, silvery line—a permanent reminder of what she had survived, but more importantly, of how fiercely her parents had fought to protect her.

On a bright, crisp Saturday morning, we stood together in the backyard of our new home. The maple tree dropped amber leaves onto the green grass, and the sound of children laughing echoed from down the street. Chloe was sitting on the wooden porch swing, happily reading a comic book without any sunglasses, her face bright, relaxed, and entirely free of fear.

David walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder as we watched our daughter play.

"You know," David murmured softly, his voice warm and steady. "For the first time in my life, I feel like I can breathe."

May you like

I leaned back into his embrace, turning my head to kiss his cheek. "Me too, David. The ghosts are finally gone."

"Yeah," he smiled, looking down at Chloe before tightening his arms around me. "And we're never looking back."
