Chapter 5 - The Black Ledger

David stared at Salvatore for a long, tense moment, debating whether to slam the door in his face or let him in. Finally, the decades of quiet loyalty outweighed the immediate suspicion, and David stepped back, pulling the door open wide.

"Come inside, Salvatore," David said coldly. "Keep your voice down. My daughter is sleeping."

Salvatore stepped into the room, his eyes darting quickly around the modest space before landing on David and me. He looked older, smaller than he had when standing beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers of the Westchester ballroom less than twelve hours ago.

"I saw what happened tonight," Salvatore began, his voice barely above a whisper as he clutched the leather briefcase. "I saw the police arrive. I saw the officers impounding the security servers from the main office. And... I saw the photographs the young photographer turned over to Detective Miller."

He set the briefcase down on the small glass table near the window and popped the brass latches with a sharp click.

"Why are you here, Salvatore?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. "Are you here to defend her? To tell us it was all a misunderstanding?"

"No, Mrs. Miller," Salvatore replied, looking up with a look of deep, sorrowful resignation in his dark eyes. "I am here because my loyalty to this family ended the moment I saw Mrs. Moretti raise her hand to that little girl. I've spent thirty years turning a blind eye to her cruelty because it was my job. But children... family... there are lines that cannot be uncrossed."

He reached into the open briefcase and pulled out a thick, leather-bound ledger with yellowed pages—a book that looked like it had been hidden away for decades. He slid it across the table toward David.

"What is this?" David asked, looking down at the book with suspicion.

"That," Salvatore said quietly, "is a record of every single financial settlement, every suppressed police report, and every domestic incident involving your mother over the past forty years. It contains the names of staff members she fired and threatened, quiet payouts she made to silence doctors who treated suspicious injuries, and... records regarding what happened to your older sister before you were born."

The room went deathly cold.

David slowly lifted his head, staring at the old estate manager with wide, disbelieving eyes. "My older sister? I... I don't have an older sister. My parents always told me I was an only child."

Salvatore swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he rested them on the edge of the table.

"You had a sister, David," Salvatore whispered, the words hanging heavy and poisonously in the quiet air of the hotel room. "Her name was Claire. And she suffered the exact same fate as your daughter—except she never made it out of that house alive."
