Chapter 3 - The Statement

The police officer arrived twenty minutes later, just as a young pediatric resident was finishing up the local anesthetic injections around Chloe's eyebrow. Chloe had buried her face in David's chest, crying silently while I held her hand, whispering silly stories about our dog to keep her mind off the stinging burn of the medicine.

The officer was a tall, weary-looking detective in a rumpled gray suit named Detective Miller. He knocked softly on the open door of the exam room, flashed his badge briefly, and stepped inside with a small notebook in his hand.

"Mr. and Mrs. Miller?" he asked, glancing between David and me.

"I'm David Miller, and this is my wife, Elena," David said, shifting Chloe slightly so she was more comfortable. "Officer, my mother assaulted my nine-year-old daughter tonight at a family gathering. We have photographic evidence, eyewitnesses, and we want to press every charge the state allows."

Detective Miller’s eyebrows rose slightly. He pulled out a pen, clicked it open, and settled into a chair near the corner of the room. "That's a heavy statement, sir. Let's start from the beginning. Give me names, timelines, and exactly what happened."

For the next twenty minutes, David and I laid it all out. We recounted the suspicious sunglasses, the conflicting lies Eleanor had spun in rapid succession, the photographer who had accidentally captured the assault on digital film, and the physical state in which we found our child. We didn't leave out a single detail. We gave him the photographer’s name and phone number, the exact timestamp of the digital files, and the address of the Westchester estate where the crime had taken place.

Detective Miller listened intently, writing furiously in his small notebook. When we finished, he closed the book with a sharp snap and looked directly at David.

"You realize," the detective said slowly, "that if we pursue this, we're talking about a Class D felony charge of second-degree assault on a minor, reckless endangerment, and child abuse. Given the social standing of the suspect—I recognize the Moretti name from the local registry—this is going to explode into a massive public scandal."

"Let it explode," David said without a moment of hesitation. "My mother has ruled our family through fear and manipulation for forty years. She thought she could treat my daughter like a piece of property she could discipline however she saw fit. I don't care about her money. I don't care about her country club friends. I want her arrested."

Detective Miller held David's gaze for a long, calculating moment, then gave a slow, approving nod. "Alright, Mr. Miller. I respect that. I've dispatched a patrol unit to the Westchester residence to secure the scene, interview the remaining guests who might still be there, and impound any available security footage. We're going to pull the photographer's digital files into evidence tonight."

He stood up, gave Chloe a gentle, reassuring wave, and handed David his card. "I'll be in touch before morning. Don't leave the hospital until the doctor clears her."

As the detective walked out of the room, the resident stepped forward with a curved suture needle and a spool of black nylon thread.

"Alright, Chloe-bug," the doctor said gently. "Almost done. Just keep holding Daddy's hand."

Watching my daughter endure the pain of having her skin sewn back together because her grandmother believed physical violence was an acceptable form of discipline made my chest ache with a fury so pure it burned. I knew, with absolute certainty, that our lives would never be the same again. The safe, predictable, wealthy bubble we had lived in for years had just burst, and there was no going back.
