Chapter 10 - The Ledger Balanced

Three months later, the sky above Manhattan was a crisp, brilliant winter blue.

I stood on the twentieth-floor balcony of the newly rebranded Sterling-Vance Financial Group—formerly Sterling Enterprises—looking out through sparkling floor-to-ceiling glass at the sprawling skyline of the city. The office was modern, minimalist, and bathed in natural light. No heavy mahogany, no arrogant intimidation tactics—just clean lines, brilliant minds, and an atmosphere of absolute integrity.

My phone buzzed on the sleek marble desk behind me.

I walked back inside, picking it up. It was a secure legal update from the federal prosecutor's office.

Trial sentencing concluded this morning. Selina Sterling sentenced to twelve years for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy. Flynn Sterling sentenced to fifteen years with no parole eligibility due to aggravated perjury and corporate sabotage.

I locked the screen, turned the phone face down, and let out a long, peaceful breath.

The nightmare was over. The accounts were balanced. The ledger was clean.

The heavy glass office door swung open softly, and Martha—now my executive chief of staff, having traded housekeeping for corporate management—stepped in carrying a fresh cup of coffee and a thick file folder.

"The board meeting is in ten minutes, Ms. Mabel," Martha smiled, handing me the folder. "The new municipal bond acquisition portfolio is finalized. Every single metric is in the green."

"Thank you, Martha," I said, taking the file and running my hand over the crisp, unblemished paper.

I looked back out the window toward the glittering expanse of the city where, years ago, a terrified, quiet accountant had been told she was born only to clean up after others.

I hadn't cleaned up their mess. I had bought the building they built it in. And for the first time in my life, every single line on the page was entirely my own.
