Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

The audio recording echoed off the antique walls, ricocheting through the minds of everyone at the table like a live grenade.
Chloe covered her mouth with both hands, staring at Selina in sheer horror. Beatrice’s husband muttered an oath under his breath and pushed his chair back from the table, distancing himself from the implosion.
Arthur didn't scream. He didn't yell. He simply stared at his wife with a look of such hollow, cataclysmic devastation that it was almost chilling. All the power, all the arrogance, all the untouchable billionaire posturing evaporated in a single second, leaving behind a broken old man who had been utterly betrayed by the two people he trusted most in the world.
"You..." Arthur rasped, turning his wide, bloodshot eyes toward Flynn. "You sleeping with... with her? My wife?"
"Dad, I can explain!" Flynn choked out, stumbling around the table, frantically waving his hands as if he could bat the air away and make the photograph vanish. "It’s not what it looks like! We were... we had too much to drink at the corporate retreat, it was a mistake, it didn't mean anything—"
"A mistake?" I cut in, my voice ringing out like a judge's gavel. I stepped closer to Flynn, looking down at the man I had supported, protected, and loved through years of failed pitches and fragile ego. "No, Flynn. A mistake is forgetting your keys. Sleeping with your stepmother in our marital bed for the past eight months while using my salary to pay for your secret apartment lease in Soho? That’s not a mistake. That’s a lifestyle choice."
"Apartment?" Arthur snapped, his head whipping toward his son. "What apartment?"
"Oh, didn't Flynn tell you?" I smiled sweetly, turning to address the entire table. "Flynn hasn't just been cheating on me with Selina. He’s also been systematically draining the family development fund to finance his Soho pied-à-terre and his sideline mistress in the PR department. In fact, if you look at the forensic audit report sitting right here in my binder..."
I reached down and picked up a thick, leather-bound document resting on the sideboard, slamming it onto the center of the dining table amidst the untouched soup bowls.
"...you'll see that Flynn and Selina haven't just been betraying their marriage vows. They’ve been embezzling from Sterling Enterprises through a network of shell companies for the last three years."
Selina lunged forward like a cornered cat, her fingernails clawed toward my face with a feral shriek. "You bitch! I'll ruin you! I'll tear you apart!"
She never made it.
Before Selina could take two steps, two uniformed private security guards—hired not by Arthur, but by my own legal team—pushed open the dining room doors, stepping into the room with heavy, unyielding authority.
"Selina Sterling, Flynn Sterling," the lead security officer announced calmly, flashing a federal warrant and a local asset-freeze order simultaneously. "You are both named in an emergency civil freeze and criminal referral filed three hours ago by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for financial fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy."
The room spun into absolute, chaotic pandemonium.
As Flynn collapsed into a chair sobbing incoherently and Selina screamed obscenities while being escorted out the door by federal marshals, Arthur sat frozen at the head of the table, staring blindly at the six-foot photograph under the chandelier.

I adjusted the sapphire pendant at my neck, picked up my wine glass, took a slow, calm sip, and looked down at my father-in-law.
"Dinner is served, Arthur," I said softly. "Enjoy."
