Chapter 7 - The Audit of a Lifetime

By midnight, the dining room had been cleared. The guests were gone, scurrying back to their gated communities to whisper about the scandal that would dominate the financial columns and gossip blogs by morning. Mrs. Gable and I sat quietly at the kitchen island, sipping chamomile tea while the house settled around us.

"You handled that like a queen, Ms. Mabel," Mrs. Gable said softly, patting my hand across the marble counter. "I’ve watched that woman treat you like dirt under her shoes for years. It’s about time someone brought the roof down on her."

"The roof was already unstable, Martha," I smiled, feeling a deep, liberating peace wash over me for the first time in half a decade. "I just removed the load-bearing lies."

My phone buzzed on the counter. It was a secure notification from my lead attorney, Sarah Jenkins.

Emergency asset freeze granted by Judge Harrison. All domestic accounts, joint properties, and offshore holdings linked to Flynn and Selina are officially locked pending federal indictment. You are fully protected under the pre-nup ironclad asset clause. The house, the portfolios, and the accounts in your maiden name are untouched.

I read the text twice, letting the reality of it sink in.

Five years ago, when Flynn and I had signed our prenuptial agreement, he had insisted on it with arrogant laughter. “Just to protect my future inheritance, Mabel,” he had smirked across the lawyer's desk. “You’ll never need it anyway, since you make your own modest living.”

He had structured the clause to protect his family's wealth from a gold-digging spouse. But because he was too lazy to read the fine print—and too arrogant to consult a competent attorney of his own—he had missed the clause I had quietly inserted through my own legal counsel: Any financial fraud, asset concealment, or marital infidelity committed by either party resulted in an immediate forfeiture of all shared claims, transferring 100% of the primary marital estate and independent assets to the innocent party.

He hadn't protected his inheritance. He had handed me the keys to his entire kingdom.

"Are you going to stay here in the house, Mabel?" Martha asked, looking around the expansive, beautifully appointed kitchen.

"For a little while," I replied, standing up and walking to the window to look out at the moonlit lawn. "Then, I think I'm going to sell it. I want a place with fewer ghosts. And a much better view."
