Chapter 2 - Crossfire in the Dark

The harsh crack of a silenced pistol echoed off the high vaulted ceiling before anyone could draw a breath.
A heavy crystal chandelier dangling above the center of the mahogany table shattered into a thousand glittering shards, raining glass across the floor. Declan moved with terrifying speed, lunging sideways and grabbing Mia and Penny by the back of their coats, dragging them down behind the thick oak base of the dining table as a volley of suppressed gunfire chewed through the polished wood.
"Stay down!" Declan ordered, his voice commanding absolute obedience even amid the chaos. He drew his custom Sig Sauer P226 from his shoulder holster with one fluid motion, flicking the safety off with his thumb.
Across the room, Graham was already moving. Instead of ducking for cover behind the table, the underboss sprinted toward the side exit near the kitchens, diving through the swinging doors just as a burst of automatic fire splintered the doorframe where his head had been a second earlier.
"They're not here for us to talk," Mia whispered, her face pale as dust and plaster settled over her dark auburn hair. She pulled Penny tightly into her chest, shielding the child's ears with her trembling hands. "They're trying to clean up the room."
"They're trying to eliminate anyone who heard the truth," Declan corrected, his eyes fixed on the reflections in the polished silver serving tray lying on the floor.
Through the distortion of the silver, Declan tracked the movement of the lead gunman as he advanced slowly between the rows of overturned chairs. The intruder wore no insignia, no gang colors, and carried military-grade hardware that standard street syndicates could never acquire. It was professional equipment, deployed by an internal faction that knew the exact security blind spots of the hotel.
Declan didn't hesitate. He pivoted from behind the heavy oak leg, firing two rapid shots through the space between two chairs. The lead gunman stumbled backward, his weapon clattering across the marble as he dropped out of sight.
The remaining two shooters opened blind fire, raking the length of the table with high-velocity rounds that splintered the mahogany and sent heavy chunks of wood flying.
"Listen to me carefully," Declan said, keeping his eyes on the shadows near the service corridor. He reached into his vest pocket and pulled out a heavy titanium keycard, pressing it firmly into Mia's hand. "Take the service elevator at the end of this corridor. It goes down to the subterranean loading bay. My private vehicle is parked in stall twelve. The engine is running."
"What about you?" Mia asked, her green eyes wide with disbelief. "You think I'm going to run off and leave you here?"
"If you stay, you and your daughter die within the next two minutes," Declan said coldly, firing another calculated shot toward the kitchen entrance to keep the second gunman pinned down. "Go. Now."
Before Mia could answer, a loud explosion rocked the ceiling near the main entrance. Thick, gray smoke began pouring down through the ventilation grates, smelling of burnt wiring and heavy industrial accelerant. The sprinkler system kicked on with a deafening roar, plunging the grand ballroom into a chaotic downpour of freezing water and blinding mist.
"Mommy, the music box!" Penny cried out as the box slipped from her wet fingers, sliding across the slick marble floor toward the middle of the room.
Without thinking, Mia lunged after it, but a heavy boot slammed down onto the polished wood inches from her hand. One of the masked gunmen stepped out of the smoke, raising his rifle barrel directly toward Mia's chest.
A deafening roar filled the room as Declan fired twice through the mist. The gunman staggered, his rifle discharging harmlessly into the floor before he collapsed into the shallow water pooling around the table.
Declan was instantly on his feet, grabbing Mia by the arm and hauling her upward. He scooped Penny into his other arm, shielding the little girl against his chest as he kicked open the service door leading into the back stairwell.
"Move!" he shouted, shoving Mia through the metal fire door just as a heavy burst of gunfire shattered the wall where they had been standing a second before.

They spilled into the dimly lit concrete stairwell, the heavy fire door slamming shut behind them with a resounding clang. The air here was cool and smelled of damp concrete and ozone. Declan didn't stop, pushing Mia down the downward-sloping steps three at a time until they reached the sub-basement level where the freight elevators and service vehicles were housed.
