Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Sub-Basement

The subterranean loading bay was dim, lit only by flickering amber emergency strobes reflecting off oil-stained concrete and rows of stacked cargo crates. The sound of water dripping from overhead pipes echoed like distant gunshots in the cavernous space.

Declan set Penny down gently beside the door of a matte-black armored SUV idling quietly in stall twelve. The engine hummed with a low, deep power that vibrated through the floorboards.

"Get inside, lock the doors, and do not open them for anyone unless I use the primary key code," Declan instructed, handing the titanium keycard back to Mia.

Mia grabbed his sleeve, her fingers gripping the fabric of his wet jacket. "They're not just after us, are they? The men upstairs—they take orders from Graham."

"Graham is a logistics manager," Declan replied, his voice chillingly calm as he checked the magazine of his sidearm, sliding it back into place with a sharp click. "Logistics managers don't command elite black-ops squads unless they have a private army backing them up. That means my entire executive board has been compromised for years."

"Then you shouldn't go back up there alone," Mia urged, her voice breaking slightly. "You saw how many of them there were. They're waiting for you."

"If I leave, they win," Declan said, his gaze locking onto hers for a fraction of a second before he turned toward the concrete stairwell door. "And if my brother is still alive somewhere out there, I am going to find out why his name was used to build a cage around my life."

Before Mia could respond, the heavy steel door at the top of the concrete ramp leading down to the loading bay groaned open. Heavy boots crunched against the gravel outside.

"Move the vehicle behind the freight columns," Declan commanded sharply, pushing Mia toward the driver's side door. "Drive straight through the security gate if you have to. It's reinforced steel; the bumper can take it."

Mia scrambled into the driver's seat, pulling Penny onto the center console to keep her low and safe. She looked out through the rain-streaked windshield just as Declan melted into the deep shadows near the back of the service bay, blending seamlessly into the darkness of the industrial sector.

Three figures in dark tactical gear stepped out from the ramp, their weapons raised, scanning the dim cavern with military precision. The lead operative motioned toward the idling SUV, signaling his teammates to flank the vehicle from both sides.

Suddenly, a heavy steel shelving unit stacked with spare tires crashed down from the upper gantry, landing directly across the path of the approaching operatives with a thunderous roar of sliding metal and tumbling rubber.

The operatives scattered, shouting code words into their comm-links.

From the darkness behind a row of stacked shipping containers, a single, suppressed shot cracked through the damp air. The lead operative dropped instantly, his body hitting the concrete with a heavy thud.

The remaining two shooters returned fire wildly into the empty crates, splintering wood and kicking up clouds of dust. "Sector four! He's near the maintenance lockers!" one of them barked into his shoulder mic.

As they turned their weapons toward the lockers, a pair of headlights suddenly flashed on full beam inside the bay. The matte-black SUV lunged forward from stall twelve, its heavy steel reinforced bumper smashing directly into the side of the second operative, sending him flying across the hood and crashing hard against the concrete wall.

The final operative raised his rifle toward the windshield of the moving vehicle, but before he could squeeze the trigger, Declan stepped out from behind a concrete pillar directly behind him, bringing the heavy butt of his Sig Sauer down hard against the back of the man's helmet. The operative collapsed silently to the floor, unconscious.

The SUV screeched to a halt beside Declan. Mia rolled down the driver's side window, her face pale but resolute. "Get in."

Declan shook his head, pulling a encrypted satellite phone from his inner pocket and tossing it onto the passenger seat. "Drive to the safehouse on 4th and Meridian. Stay inside the panic room until I contact you. Do not trust anyone from the main estate, not even the security captains."

"And you?" Mia asked, her voice trembling slightly despite her efforts to remain strong.

"I have a meeting with an old friend," Declan said, his eyes narrowing into a hard, dangerous stare as he stepped back into the shadows of the loading bay. "It's time to find out what really happened four years ago."
