Chapter 6 - The Steel Trap

The red emergency strobes painted the subterranean office in sweeping, frantic arcs of crimson. The high-pitched wail of the security breach klaxon vibrated through the reinforced concrete walls, drowning out the low hum of the cooling fans.

Declan moved with lethal efficiency, sliding the concealed wall panel open to reveal his primary armory rack. He grabbed a compact submachine gun, slapped a fresh magazine into the well, and tossed a tactical vest to Marcus across the desk.

"They didn't just stumble onto this location," Declan said, his voice clipped and ice-cold as he secured the straps across his chest. "Graham has been auditing my private assets for months. This facility was compromised the moment he realized I was looking into the warehouse fire."

Marcus caught the vest with his good hand, his weathered face tightening into a grim line. "If the outer perimeter is breached, the automated blast doors will seal automatically in less than three minutes. Once they close from the outside, this room becomes a concrete tomb."

"Then we don't wait for them to lock us in," Declan replied, tapping the master console to override the primary elevator controls. "We take the service ventilation shaft leading to the old drainage tunnels. It comes out three blocks away near the railway yard."

Before Marcus could answer, the heavy steel elevator doors at the far end of the room erupted inward with a deafening screech of metal. Smoke and white suppression foam poured into the workspace as a flashbang grenade bounced across the polished floor, detonating with a blinding white flash and a concussion wave that rattled the teeth in Declan's jaw.

Through the haze of smoke, three tactical operatives in matte-black armor pushed through the doorway, their suppressed rifles leveled and sweeping the room.

Declan didn't hesitate. He dropped to one knee behind the mahogany desk, squeezing the trigger in a controlled three-round burst. The lead operative spun hard against the doorframe and dropped. Beside him, Marcus raised his revolver, firing twice through the smoke to suppress the second attacker.

"Move!" Declan shouted, lunging toward the hidden ventilation hatch behind the storage shelves.

He wrenched the heavy steel grate open just as a hail of high-velocity rounds chewed through the wall where his head had been a second before. Marcus scrambled inside first, his bad knee protesting with a sharp grunt, followed swiftly by Declan, who slammed the heavy iron grate shut and secured the manual deadbolt from the inside.

Darkness enveloped them, punctuated only by the distant, muffled echoes of boots kicking against the reinforced door they had just left behind.
