Chapter 5 - A New Order

By Monday morning, the Moretti mansion had returned to its immaculate, terrifying state of perfection, but beneath the polished marble and silent corridors, the entire power structure of the estate had been violently rewritten.
In the west wing, Elena Bellini stood in front of a sprawling, walk-in wardrobe filled with expensive new clothes, staring at her reflection with wide, disbelieving eyes. Her old, faded house dresses were gone, replaced by fine silk blouses and tailored skirts provided by order of the master himself. Down the hall, her daughter Sophia sat at a polished mahogany desk in a sunlit bedroom twice the size of their old quarters, her fingers tracing the smooth leather cover of a brand-new journal as she waited for the private tutor who would accompany her to her new academy.
On her lap sat a small, carved wooden horse—a quiet gift left on her pillow earlier that morning by Marcus on behalf of Rocco, with no note attached, needing no words to explain its meaning.
Downstairs in the grand dining room, Rocco Moretti sat at the head of the long table, the morning sunlight cutting through the heavy drapes to illuminate the black coffee and legal briefs spread out before him. The atmosphere was different today. The lawyers who usually hovered around him like vultures now stood five feet away, speaking in hushed, nervous whispers, their eyes averted whenever the mafia boss so much time glanced in their direction. They knew what had happened in the east wing vault; they knew that a betrayal from within had been swiftly, brutally excised without a single gunshot being fired inside the walls.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Elena entered, walking with a newfound, hesitant dignity, pushing a sleek, modern white bassinet into the room. Inside, the newborn—now officially registered in the family registry under his true name, Leo Moretti—was awake, staring up at the vaulted ceiling with bright, curious eyes.
Rocco looked up from his documents. He set his pen down slowly, the metallic click echoing softly in the quiet room. He stood up from his chair and walked around the table, stopping beside the bassinet.
He looked down at his son, then raised his eyes to meet Elena’s nervous gaze.
"Is he settling into the new nursery?" Rocco asked, his voice steady and calm.
"Yes, Mr. Moretti," Elena whispered, dipping her head respectfully. "He slept through the entire night. Sophia... Sophia went in to check on him before her tutor arrived. She wanted to make sure he had his blanket."
A faint, almost imperceptible shadow of a smile touched the corners of Rocco’s mouth. He reached out, his large hand gently resting on the edge of the bassinet.

"Tell Sophia she doesn't need to check on him anymore," Rocco said softly, his dark eyes fixing on the infant's tiny, grasping hand as it reached up toward the light. "She earned her place at this table. From now on, no one in this house walks the halls alone."
Elena nodded, her eyes shining with unshed tears of relief and lingering awe. She bowed slightly and stepped back into the shadows of the service archway, leaving the mafia boss standing alone with his son in the silent, formidable heart of the empire he had nearly lost—and successfully reclaimed.
