Chapter 7 - Whispers in the West Wing

Back in the Moretti mansion, the west wing had transformed into a sanctuary of quiet luxury. Sunlight poured through tall, arched windows, illuminating the plush velvet carpets and the rows of educational books stacked neatly on Sophia’s new study desk. For an eight-year-old who had spent her entire life sleeping on a narrow cot in the staff quarters, listening to the muffled arguments and quiet fears of her mother through thin drywall, this new reality felt like living inside a fairy tale written by a very stern king.

Sophia sat at her desk, her small fingers holding a heavy fountain pen as she practiced her cursive writing, though her eyes kept drifting toward the carved wooden horse sitting beside her inkwell.

A soft knock sounded at the heavy mahogany door, and Elena entered, carrying a silver tray with a bowl of warm soup and fresh bread. Her new silk blouse rustled softly, and her hair was pinned back with a neat silver clip—a gift from the head housekeeper earlier that morning to match her elevated station as master nursery supervisor.

"How is your writing, sweetheart?" Elena asked softly, setting the tray down on the edge of the desk and brushing a stray lock of dark hair from Sophia's forehead.

"It’s good, Mama," Sophia murmured, looking up with wide, serious eyes. "Mr. Moretti’s man—Marcus—said my tutor is coming at ten o'clock. He said I have to learn French and mathematics and history, just like the children from the academy in the city."

Elena sighed, a complex mixture of pride and profound anxiety tightening her chest. "They are giving us everything, Sophia. A life we could never have dreamed of. But you must remember... this house is built on a very deep, very dangerous foundation. Mr. Moretti is a good man to those who save him, but he is still the master of this house. You must never forget to be careful."

"I'm not scared of him, Mama," Sophia said quietly, her voice carrying an unshakable calm that never ceased to astonish her mother. "He looks at people like he's trying to solve a puzzle. But he didn't look at the baby the way Mrs. Moretti did. He looked like he wanted to protect him."

Before Elena could respond, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed at the outer double doors of the suite. Both mother and daughter froze. Visitors to the west wing were strictly prohibited by order of the boss himself, and security personnel never knocked unless an emergency protocol had been triggered.

Elena hurried to the door and pulled it open. Marcus stood in the hallway, his face even grimmer than usual, his hand resting casually near his holster.

"Elena, Sophia," Marcus said, his voice clipped and urgent. "Mr. Moretti has just returned from the airfield. He has requested Sophia’s presence in the grand study immediately."

Sophia didn't hesitate. She stood up from her chair, smoothed down the skirt of her new dress, and looked up at the head of security with absolute composure. "Is the baby okay?"

May you like

Marcus blinked, a flicker of genuine respect softening his hardened features. "The young master is sleeping peacefully, Sophia. The boss just... wants to talk to you."
