Chapter 33 - The Fire Escape

The cold interior of the SUV felt like a tomb. Chloe stared at the screen of her phone, her thumb hovering over the glass as her vision blurred with tears of fury and terror.
"They have her," Chloe breathed, the words barely making it past her throat. "Dominic's people are inside my apartment."
Gabriel didn't slow down. He wove the heavy vehicle between a yellow cab and a delivery truck on the Queensboro Bridge, the steel girders flashing past in an endless cage of rusted iron and falling snow.
"Read the text to me," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into the icy, command cadence of a man navigating a war zone. "Word for word, Chloe."
Chloe read it aloud, her voice trembling. "*Bring the ledger Vittorio gave you, or your mother won't survive the winter.* Gabriel... Vittorio never gave me a ledger! Dominic thought I had it because of the translation at *Il Canto*, but the ledger we handed to the federal prosecutors was the one we pulled from the cellar vault!"
"They aren't talking about the syndicate's financial ledger," Gabriel said, cutting across two lanes as they hit the exit ramp toward Sunnyside, Queens. "They’re talking about my father’s personal journal. The black book where he documented the family’s true line of succession."
"I don't have it!" Chloe shouted, desperation clawing at her chest. "I’ve never seen it! Why would they think I have it?"
"Because Vittorio’s note didn't say *'look to the hands that speak without sound'*, Chloe," Gabriel replied grimly, glancing at her. "Agent Miller only read half the note. He read what the U.S. Attorney wanted him to read to pressure us into cooperation. But Vittorio’s private safe had two compartments. I know my father. If Sal is in your apartment, Dominic already knows what Vittorio wrote in Zurich before he died."
"What did he write, Gabriel? Tell me!"
Gabriel pulled the SUV into an alleyway two blocks behind Chloe’s apartment building, cutting the headlights. The heavy brick buildings of Sunnyside rose up into the gray sky, drab fire escapes crisscrossing the brick facades like iron spiderwebs.
"Vittorio knew Dominic was planning to liquidate the entire family business to a syndicate out of Montreal," Gabriel said quietly, turning to face her. "He knew Dominic would kill anyone who stood in the way—including me. Vittorio left the legal proof that Dominic was illegitimate—that Dominic had no blood claim to the family trust—in the care of the only person in New York who couldn't be bought, couldn't be wiretapped, and couldn't be forced to speak under deposition."
The air in the car seemed to evaporate.
Chloe stared at Gabriel, the truth washing over her in a wave of suffocating realization.
"My mother," Chloe whispered.
"Your mother didn't just wash dishes at *Il Canto*," Gabriel said. "For thirty years, your mother was my father’s only confidante. Because Vittorio didn't know sign language, Chloe. But your mother could read his lips from thirty feet away across a crowded dining room. She was his eyes and ears. She knew every dirty secret in that family before Dominic or I were even old enough to walk."
A tear tracked down Chloe’s cheek, hot against the freezing air that seeped through the car windows. "She kept that secret from me my entire life. She let me work double shifts to pay our rent, Gabriel! She let me scrape nickels together for her insulin!"
"Because she was protecting you," Gabriel said fiercely, reaching across the console to grasp her shoulders. "Vittorio made a pact with her. As long as she stayed invisible, you were safe. But when Dominic found the translation from the cellar, that fragile wall broke."
Gabriel reached into the glove compartment. He pulled out a small, sleek matte-black automatic pistol, checking the slide with a clean, practiced click.
Chloe flinched at the sight of the weapon. "No. No more shooting. You promised."
"I promised I wouldn't kill for the syndicate, Chloe," Gabriel said, slipping the weapon into the inner pocket of his woolen overcoat. "I didn't promise I wouldn't kill to protect your mother."
He opened his door, stepping out into the ankle-deep snow of the alley. "We aren't walking through the front door. Sal has two men posted in the lobby, guaranteed. We’re going up the rear fire escape, through Mrs. Gable’s window on the third floor, and we’re coming into your apartment through the bathroom ceiling access."
Chloe swallowed her terror, stepping out into the biting wind beside him. "She doesn't know sign language for *danger*, Gabriel. We only ever used one sign when things were bad."
"What was it?"
May you like
Chloe curled her right hand into a fist, resting it against her heart, then tapped it twice. "It means *hold still*. If she sees me do that, she won't move, no matter what happens."
"Good," Gabriel said, leading her toward the rusted iron ladder hanging in the alley. "Because when we open that door, everything is going to change."
