Chapter 34 - The Language of Silence

The rusted rungs of the fire escape groaned under their weight as they climbed through the veil of falling snow. The bitter cold bit into Chloe’s bare hands, but she barely felt it. Every nerve in her body was tuned to the soft scrape of Gabriel’s boots ahead of her.
They slipped through the unlocked service window on the third-floor landing, creeping down the carpeted hallway that smelled of boiled cabbage and old radiator steam—the familiar scents of Chloe’s childhood, now tainted with lethal menace.
Outside apartment 4B, the silence was suffocating.
Gabriel knelt by the lock, pulling two slender pieces of stainless steel from his lapel. Within three seconds, a soft *click* signaled the deadbolt’s release. He didn't push the door open. He looked back at Chloe, his eyes hard as flint, and held up three fingers, counting down.
Three. Two. One.
Gabriel kicked the door open with explosive force, his weapon raised, sweeping the small living room.
"Down!" Gabriel barked.
The scene inside the small apartment froze in instant, surreal clarity.
Sitting at the small laminate kitchen table was Elena. Her silver hair was neatly pinned, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her face pale as parchment. Across from her sat Salvatore "Sal" Moretti, a bulky man in an expensive leather jacket, sipping espresso from Chloe’s chipped ceramic mug. A second man, younger, wearing a heavy down coat and black leather gloves, stood by the radiator with his hand tucked inside his jacket.
Elena’s eyes widened the second Chloe burst into the room behind Gabriel.
Before Sal could reach for the revolver resting on the tablecloth, Gabriel crossed the distance in two strides. His heavy boot came down on Sal’s wrist with a sickening crack, sending the revolver spinning across the linoleum into the corner. With his other hand, Gabriel leveled his firearm directly between the eyes of the man by the radiator.
"Touch that zipper," Gabriel whispered with deadly serenity, "and you don't leave this borough alive."
The young man slowly raised his hands, stepping back until his spine hit the peeling wallpaper.
Sal groaned on the floor, clutching his broken wrist, sweat beading on his forehead. "Gabriel... you’re making a mistake. Dominic sent us to protect her from the feds..."
"Shut up," Gabriel said, not taking his eyes off the younger enforcer.
Chloe rushed past them, dropping to her knees in front of her mother’s chair. Elena was trembling, her pale hands fluttering in the air like wounded birds.
*Are you hurt?* Chloe signed frantically, her hands shaking violently. *Did they touch you?*
Elena looked into Chloe’s eyes. A single tear spilled over her wrinkled eyelid, but her hands were remarkably steady when she answered.
She didn't sign *danger*. She didn't sign *fear*.
Elena curled her index finger and thumb into an ancient, slow circle, then touched her lips and moved her hand downward in a sharp, rhythmic diagonal.
*The book is gone,* Elena signed.
Chloe froze. "What?"
Elena repeated the signs, her eyes fixed entirely on Chloe, completely ignoring the armed men standing five feet away.
*The black book is not here. Vittorio took it back three days before his stroke.*
Gabriel heard Chloe’s gasp. Without lowering his weapon, he spoke without turning his head. "What is she saying, Chloe?"
"She says Vittorio took the black book back three days before he died," Chloe said, her voice hollow.
Sal let out a wheezing, bitter laugh from the floor, clutching his shattered wrist against his chest. "You see? The old lady is lying. Dominic had eyes on Vittorio twenty-four hours a day that whole week. Vittorio was confined to his bed in Westchester! He couldn't have walked into Queens to take anything back!"
Elena’s gaze shifted to Sal. Her expression didn't contain an ounce of fear; instead, an icy, dignified contempt hardened her frail features. She looked at Gabriel, her hands moving with measured, deliberate clarity.
Chloe translated, her voice trembling with every word: "*Vittorio didn't come to Queens. I went to Westchester. Vittorio sent his private driver to pick me up because he knew Dominic was poisoning his digitalis drops.*"
Gabriel’s breath hitched. "She was there?"
Elena continued signing, her eyes burning into Gabriel’s soul.
"*Vittorio didn't hide the book in Queens,*” Chloe translated, feeling the room tilt beneath her feet. “*He gave the book to the only person Dominic would never dare search. He gave it to the priest at Our Lady of Sorrows. The priest who performed your baptism, Gabriel.*"
Sal cursed under his breath, thrashing on the floor. "You crazy old deaf bitch—"
Gabriel stepped forward and planted his heel firmly onto Sal’s chest, cutting off his breath with brutal efficiency.
"Dominic didn't poison my father alone," Gabriel said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying certainty. "Dominic was in Milan. Who administered the drops, Sal? Who was in that house every single night while Vittorio was dying?"
Sal grimaced, his teeth bared in agony, but he remained silent.
Elena slowly stood up from the kitchen table. She walked past the shattered mug, past the blood dripping onto her linoleum, and laid her palm gently against Gabriel’s cheek.
She raised her free hand and signed three distinct words.
Chloe watched her mother’s fingers, and the breath went out of her chest entirely.
"No..." Chloe whispered, horror choking her throat. "Mom, that's not possible."
Gabriel didn't break eye contact with Elena. "Chloe. Tell me what she just said."

Chloe looked at Gabriel, the man who had torn his family apart to protect her, the man who had promised her truth.
"She signed three names," Chloe choked out, tears finally breaking free. "The poison wasn't given by Dominic. It was given by the woman who raised you. Your sister, Sophia."
