Chapter 38 - The Altar of Truth

The crimson laser dots danced across the altar like demonic fireflies. One settled squarely on Gabriel’s sternum. Another hovered over Father Thomas’s frail chest. The third danced across Elena’s woolen coat.
Gabriel immediately stepped to his left, using his own broad torso to shield both Chloe and her mother from the line of fire.
"Miller," Gabriel said, his voice flat and steady despite the four automatic weapons leveled at him. "A federal badge doesn't carry much weight when you bring hired muscle from Chicago into a consecrated house."
Agent Miller walked down the center aisle, his heavy combat boots echoing off the flagstones. He didn't look like an investigator anymore; he had stripped off his government tie, wearing a dark tactical jacket with no insignia.
"The federal government closed its file on Vittorio Costello three hours ago, Gabriel," Miller said, stopping ten paces away at the foot of the altar stairs. "As far as Washington is concerned, Dominic Costello is in federal prison, the syndicate's assets are seized, and the case is closed. What happens in this church tonight is strictly private estate litigation."
"You work for Frank Carbone," Sophia shouted down from the choir loft, her shotgun still aimed at Miller's head.
Miller looked up, completely unfazed by the weapon trained on him. "Put the pea-shooter down, Sophia. You’re a brilliant musician, but you don't know how to handle recoil from that angle. You fire that 12-gauge from thirty feet up, you'll blow out your own shoulder and pepper the pews with birdshot while my guys cut you in half before you hit the floor."
He turned his attention back to Father Thomas.
"The journal, Father. Place it on the steps."
Father Thomas didn't move. He held the heavy leather book tightly against his chest, his milky eyes staring at Miller with the moral clarity of an old man who had long ceased to fear death. "This book belongs to the truth, Agent Miller. It does not belong to thieves."
Miller gestured with a flick of his index finger.
The mercenary on his left stepped forward, raising the butt of his rifle to strike the elderly priest.
Before the blow could land, Elena moved.
With a speed that defied her age, she stepped between the mercenary and Father Thomas, grabbing the brass altar crucifix resting on the linen cloth and driving the heavy, gilded base directly into the mercenary’s temple. The man grunted, stumbling sideways into the communion rail with a dull clang of steel and bone.
"Shoot her!" Miller ordered.
"No!" Gabriel roared.
Gabriel lunged forward, tackling Miller to the marble floor just as the second mercenary opened fire. The deafening crack of suppressed automatic gunfire tore through the sanctuary, shattering the stained-glass window of Saint Michael above the altar into a thousand glittering shards.
From the loft above, Sophia fired.
The roar of the 12-gauge was catastrophic in the enclosed space. The blast shredded the stone column beside the third mercenary, sending shards of masonry slicing into his face and driving him backward into the pews.
Chaos exploded through the cathedral.
Chloe grabbed her mother by the arm, pulling her behind the massive marble base of the high pulpit as plaster dust and gunfire rained down around them. Elena wasn't screaming; she couldn't hear the deafening violence, but she felt the thunderous vibrations through the stone floor beneath her boots.
In the center aisle, Gabriel and Miller wrestled on the blood-slicked stone. Miller was trained in close-quarters combat, driving a short-bladed tactical knife upward toward Gabriel’s ribs. Gabriel caught Miller's wrist, using the weight of his entire body to slam the agent’s arm against the edge of the stone step until the knife skittered away into the darkness.
"You're a traitor to your badge, Miller!" Gabriel hissed, landing two brutal punches to the agent’s jaw, knocking him dazed against the communion rail.
"The book, Chloe!" Father Thomas gasped from the floor beside the pulpit, clutching his bleeding arm where a ricochet had grazed him. He shoved the heavy leather volume into Chloe's hands. "Take it! The fire escape behind the sacristy leads to the alley!"
Chloe looked down at the heavy black book in her arms. The brass clasp was tarnished with age and dark stains that looked chillingly like dried blood.
Suddenly, a heavy boot came down on Chloe’s wrist, pinning her hand against the marble.
The fourth mercenary—tall, wearing a tactical mask—loomed over her, the muzzle of his rifle pressed against her forehead.
"Let go of the book," the man growled through his mask.
Chloe looked up into the black barrel. She saw her mother kneeling three feet away, Elena’s hands trembling as she watched her daughter facing certain death.
Elena didn't hesitate.
She reached out and caught the mercenary’s combat boot, digging her fingernails into the leather lace, throwing her entire weight to the side with desperate maternal fury. The man’s balance shifted just enough for Chloe to wrench her wrist free and drive the heavy brass corner of the ledger upward into the mercenary's groin.
The man gasped, doubling over.
Before he could recover, Gabriel was on him. Gabriel seized the mercenary from behind, locking his arm around the man’s throat in a lethal sleeper hold, twisting his body until the mercenary collapsed unconscious onto the shattered stained glass.
Gabriel looked up, his chest heaving, his face covered in plaster dust and blood.
The church fell into a sudden, ringing silence.
Two mercenaries lay motionless on the pews; the third was groaning, clutching his shattered shoulder; Miller was crawling toward his dropped sidearm near the front doors.
From the choir loft, Sophia came walking down the narrow spiral staircase, her shotgun empty, dragging the heavy barrel behind her like a dead branch. Her face was streaked with soot and tears.
"Gabriel..." Sophia whispered, reaching the bottom step.
Gabriel walked toward his sister, his hands open. He didn't pick up a weapon. He didn't look at Miller crawling on the floor. He simply reached out and pulled Sophia into his arms, holding her trembling body against his chest as she broke down into jagged, uncontrollable sobs.
"It's over, Sophia," Gabriel whispered into her hair. "It's over."
Chloe stood up from behind the pulpit, helping her mother to her feet. The heavy black ledger was secure in Chloe's arms.
Suddenly, the front doors of the cathedral didn't open—they were blown off their hinges by a concussive flashbang.

A voice blared through a megaphone from the snowy street outside:
"Federal tactical units! Drop all weapons and put your hands on your heads! You are surrounded on all sides!"
