Chapter 7 - The Inner Sanctum

Inside the sterile confines of the subterranean safe room, the air hummed with the quiet, intense whir of computer servers and monitoring equipment. The large wall screens displayed multiple feeds from the estate’s exterior cameras. A heavy, suffocating silence hung in the room, broken only by the rhythmic beep of the security console and Lily’s soft, exhausted breathing as she drifted off to sleep against Isabella’s shoulder.

Leo sat on the floor beside Isabella, his knees drawn up to his chin, his dark eyes locked on the primary monitor. On screen, three black SUVs had breached the outer gates, their tires kicking up gravel as they sped up the private driveway toward the main entrance. Men in tactical gear, faces obscured by balaclavas, poured out of the vehicles, weapons raised.

"They're here for the house," Leo whispered, his voice dangerously devoid of childish emotion, sounding more like a seasoned tactician than an eight-year-old boy. "Uncle Marcus told me... he said people always come for the vault when Father is away."

Isabella placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, fighting down the rising panic in her own chest. "Your father has security measures we don't even know about, Leo. And he’s coming back. He knows how to protect this place."

Or they planned his trap while he was away, a dark voice whispered in the back of her mind. If the enemies knew Dominic’s schedule down to the minute, they also knew how to intercept him on the downtown highway. The thought made her stomach lurch.

Suddenly, one of the camera feeds flickered. The feed from the main foyer showed the heavy oak double doors exploding inward in a shower of splinters and dust. The masked intruders swarmed into the grand hall, their weapons drawn, systematically clearing the lower level.

One of the men—larger than the others, bearing a jagged scar across his exposed neck—stepped directly in front of the primary camera in the hallway. He looked up at the lens with a chilling, predatory grin, knowing exactly who was watching from the monitors below.

"Dominic isn't here to save you this time, little prince," a raspy voice echoed through the estate’s internal intercom system, bleeding into the safe room audio. "Open the vault, or we burn this entire mausoleum to the ground."

Leo flinched at the sound, pressing closer to Isabella.

Isabella’s blood ran cold. The vault. Not the safe room, not the living quarters—the underground vault where Dominic stored the physical ledgers, digital backups, and leverage files that kept his empire afloat. Only Dominic and a select few high-ranking members knew the biometric codes to access it.

"They want the empire," Isabella said aloud, her mind racing. "They want to ruin him completely before they kill him."

"We have to stop them," Leo said, standing up abruptly, his eyes blazing with a fierce, reckless determination that mirrored his father’s dangerous resolve.

"Stop them? Leo, we are locked in a bunker," Isabella reasoned, grabbing his arm gently. "We are safe down here."

"Are we?" Leo challenged, pointing a small finger at the monitor. One of the intruders on screen was carrying a heavy metal canister, spraying a chemical accelerant along the baseboards of the main staircase directly above the safe room's hidden entrance. "They're going to burn the house down, Isabella. The ventilation shaft for this bunker runs right under the grand staircase. If they set fire to the foyer, smoke and fire will fill this room in ten minutes. We’ll suffocate."

Panic spiked through Isabella’s veins. He was right. The safe room was a fortress against bullets, but it wasn't designed to withstand an inferno deliberately set from above.

She looked at Lily, sleeping peacefully, completely unaware of the mortal danger surrounding them. Then she looked at Leo, whose young face was set in a mask of grim maturity.

"Is there another way out?" Isabella asked urgently.

Leo nodded, stepping toward the back wall of the bunker. He pressed a hidden panel behind a row of emergency medical supplies, revealing a small, biometric keypad. "Father showed me this once, when I was seven. It’s an emergency drainage tunnel that leads out to the boathouse near the lake. But it requires a two-person authorization override—an adult security code and a family biometric."

Isabella didn't hesitate. "What do we need to do?"

Leo stepped up to the keypad, pressing his thumb against the glass scanner. A soft green light flashed. Biometric verified.

"Now you need to enter the master override code," Leo said, looking up at her expectantly. "Father told me he gave the backup override to the person he trusted most in the main house. He called it the safeguard key."

Isabella froze. The safeguard key? Dominic had never mentioned a code to her.

Or had he?

Her mind flashed back to their quiet conversation in his office, the night before he kissed her. He had whispered a sequence of numbers into her ear as a joke about her birthday, telling her to remember them if she ever needed to open his private desk drawer.

1-9-8-8-0-4-1-2.

Without thinking, Isabella stepped forward and punched the eight-digit sequence into the keypad.

A loud, mechanical hiss echoed through the back wall. The heavy concrete panel slowly slid inward, revealing a dark, damp stone tunnel stretching out into the gloom, smelling of damp earth and rushing water.

"It worked," Leo whispered, his eyes wide with awe.

"Stay close to me," Isabella commanded, scooping Lily up into her arms once more, grabbing a heavy emergency flashlight from the wall bracket, and ushering Leo into the dark escape tunnel as the heavy door slid shut behind them.
