Chapter 10 - The Dawn of the King

The mountain sunrise broke over the jagged peaks of the Blue Ridge range, painting the sky in violent streaks of crimson, gold, and ash-gray.
Inside the cabin, Claire sat rigidly at the wooden dining table, her eyes fixed on the dead screen of the satellite phone. She had spent the entire night barricading the doors, gathering canned goods, and fashioning a makeshift weapon from a heavy iron poker by the fireplace. Ruby was asleep on the sofa, exhausted from the terror of the previous day, her small chest rising and falling in rhythmic, innocent breaths.
Claire knew Victor was coming. She knew the cabin was a trap. But she also knew she wasn't going down without a war.
Suddenly, the deep, rumbling roar of heavy diesel engines echoed through the quiet forest outside.
Claire stood up instantly, gripping the iron poker with white-knuckled intensity. She stepped toward the front window and peered cautiously through the heavy wooden blinds.
Three matte-black tactical SUVs were idling in the clearing outside the cabin, their headlights cutting through the morning mist. Doors slammed shut in unison. Heavy combat boots hit the gravel path.
"They're here," Claire whispered to herself, a cold wave of adrenaline washing away her fear and replacing it with a lethal, protective fury.
She turned toward the sofa to wake Ruby, intending to slip out through the underground bunker tunnel before they breached the front door. But before she could take a step, the heavy wooden front door of the cabin exploded inward with a deafening blast of splintered oak and iron hinges.
Smoke filled the doorway. Two armed enforcers poured into the room, their submachine guns raised, sweeping the space.
"Clear!" one shouted.
Claire raised the iron poker, stepping in front of the sofa to shield Ruby, ready to swing with everything she had.
Before the enforcer could pull his trigger, a dark, heavy shadow dropped silently from the loft ceiling above the living room like a striking predator.
A heavy tactical combat knife flashed in the pale morning light.
Before the first enforcer could even scream, a gloved hand clamped over his mouth while the blade sliced cleanly through the air, sending the man crashing unconscious to the floor. The second enforcer spun around in shock, raising his weapon, but a heavy steel boot slammed directly into his chest with bone-crushing force, sending him flying backward through the shattered front door into the dirt outside.
Silence descended upon the cabin once again, save for the crackling of the fireplace and the heavy, ragged breathing of the man standing in the doorway.
He was wearing a dark, blood-stained trench coat over a torn suit shirt. His left arm was wrapped tightly in a makeshift tourniquet of gauze and dark crimson fabric. His face was bruised, caked in dried blood and soot, and his silver hair was wild and unkempt.
Yet, as he slowly lifted his head and his fierce, storm-gray eyes locked onto Claire and Ruby, there was no mistaking who he was.
"Nathaniel?" Claire choked out, dropping the iron poker as her knees finally gave way.
May you like
Nathaniel crossed the room in two long strides, dropping to his knees right in front of her. He didn't say a word. He simply pulled Claire and Ruby into his arms, crushing both of them against his chest in a desperate, unbreakable embrace, burying his face in their hair as the last remnants of a ten-year nightmare finally melted away into the morning air.
"I told you," Nathaniel whispered against Claire’s ear, his voice breaking with raw, overwhelming emotion as the sun crested the mountain peaks outside. "I told you I was going to finish it."
