Chapter 6 - The Breach at Dawn

The heavy steel door of the emergency stairwell slammed shut behind Claire and Ruby with a dull, echoing thud that resonated deep within the concrete core of Graves Tower.
Claire stumbled forward, her knees trembling so violently she nearly dropped Ruby onto the cold metal steps. The emergency red guide lights cast long, distorted shadows down the steep descent, bathing the narrow stairwell in an eerie, blood-orange glow. Around them, the muffled sounds of distant gunfire and heavy boots pounding against the penthouse floors above filtered through the reinforced walls, a grim reminder of the war Nathaniel was fighting alone upstairs.
"Mommy, are we going to be okay? Where is Daddy going?" Ruby whimpered, clinging tightly to Claire’s neck, her small face buried against her shoulder as silent tears tracked through the dust on her cheeks.
"He's coming, sweetie. Your daddy is strong, he’s going to meet us down below," Claire lied smoothly, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to sound brave. She tightened her grip on the heavy, encrypted satellite phone Nathaniel had shoved into her hand, its digital screen glowing with a pulsing green navigation marker pointing straight down toward the subterranean rail line. "Hold on to me tight, Ruby. Don't look back."
They flew down the flights of metal stairs, their boots clattering rhythmically against the grating. Every second felt like an eternity, the oppressive heat of the building’s internal infrastructure replaced by the damp, chilling draft of the underground transit tunnels below.
Finally, the stairwell ended in front of a massive, circular vault door marked with a yellow radiation-hazard symbol and a digital keypad. Claire didn't hesitate. She pressed the satellite phone directly against the biometric scanner embedded in the thick steel wall.
BEEP.
The green light flashed twice, and a series of heavy pneumatic bolts disengaged with a deafening, mechanical roar. The vault door swung outward, revealing a sleek, bullet-shaped autonomous transit pod idling on a single magnetized rail track that vanished into the pitch-black subterranean tunnel ahead.
"Get in, Ruby! Quick!" Claire urged, shoving the little girl into the plush leather seating of the pod before scrambling in after her and slamming the emergency closure button on the console.
The pod doors sealed shut just as the sound of muffled explosions echoed from the upper stairwell levels. Inside the capsule, a soft automated voice chimed: “Authorization confirmed: Graves Secure Transit. Destination: Blue Ridge Sector 4. Departure in five seconds.”
Claire watched through the reinforced glass viewing port as the heavy vault door began to close automatically. But before it sealed completely, a dark silhouette burst through the stairwell exit—a masked enforcer in tactical gear, his submachine gun raised.

"Stop!" the enforcer roared, firing a burst of rounds that pinged harmlessly off the thick, bulletproof glass of the departing pod.
With a silent, instantaneous surge of magnetic acceleration, the transit pod shot forward into the dark tunnel, throwing Claire and Ruby back against their seats as they vanished into the earth at three hundred miles per hour, leaving the Syndicate and Graves Tower far behind.
