Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Syndicate

Back in the penthouse, the air was thick with the acrid stench of cordite, burnt copper, and pulverized concrete.
Nathaniel Graves stood in the center of the devastated living room, his tall frame silhouetted against the stormy Aldridge skyline visible through the shattered glass windows. Rain blew in sideways, soaking the shoulders of his tailored suit and plastering his silver hair against his forehead. In his right hand, the Sig Sauer pistol was locked open, its slide rattling as the last empty magazine dropped free and clattered across the blood-stained hardwood floor.
He had expended every round. Three more enforcers lay motionless near the elevator foyer, neutralized in close-quarters combat that had left Nathaniel with a deep, jagged gash across his left forearm and a dull, throbbing ache in his ribs where a tactical boot had connected during the brawl.
Yet, the elevator chimes did not ring again. The floor was silent.
"Vance," Nathaniel rasped into his lapel comm-link, coughing slightly as dust filled his lungs. "Vance, report."
Static hissed in his ear for several agonizing seconds before a heavy, groaning voice broke through. "Mr... Mr. Graves... I’m on the sub-level armory bridge. The bulkhead doors are holding... but the Syndicate cut the main power grid. They’re bringing in heavy thermal-lance charges to cut through the vault."
Nathaniel’s cold, storm-gray eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Did the pod clear the primary junction?"
"Yes, sir," Vance panted heavily, the sound of labored breathing and dripping blood audible over the comms. "Miss Claire and the little girl... they crossed the river sector five minutes ago. They’re outside the blast radius. But... Mr. Graves, you can't hold the tower alone. The entire north wing is compromised. They sent a second team up the exterior freight elevators."
"Let them come," Nathaniel said softly, his voice cutting through the comms with absolute, terrifying finality. "Tell our offshore contacts to execute Protocol Zero. Wipe the main servers. If the Syndicate wants the Graves empire, they can have an empty shell."
"Protocol Zero?" Vance gasped over the line. "Sir, that means everything—all our assets, our holdings, the entire legacy—it all goes dark."
"It means nothing if my family isn't safe," Nathaniel replied coldly. "Do it, Vance. Now."

Before Vance could argue further, the sound of heavy, armored boots marching in unison echoed up the shattered marble hallway outside the penthouse. A dozen red laser sights cut through the drifting dust and smoke, painting the walls with bloody points of light.
Nathaniel didn't flinch. He slowly reached down to his ankle holster, drawing a heavy combat knife with a jagged, serrated edge. He stood tall, his shoulders back, his face a mask of cold, unyielding fury. The King of Aldridge was ready to collect his final debt.
