Chapter 10 - The Gathering Storm

The safehouse was an old, reinforced maritime logistics office tucked away deep inside a secure perimeter at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, surrounded by twenty-foot chain-link fences topped with razor wire and guarded by a dozen loyal Moretti capos.
Inside the main operations room, a massive digital map of Manhattan and the outer boroughs glowed against the dark wall, marked with red and blue tracking nodes.
Ethan stood by the long steel table, watching Damen and a team of tech specialists decrypt the black flash drive recovered from the hospital raid. Sarah was resting in an adjoining medical cot, finally asleep under the care of a trusted private physician Antonio had summoned.
Lily was curled up on a small leather cot in the corner, clutching her stuffed bear, sound asleep after the most harrowing day of her young life. Ethan had refused to leave her side until her breathing grew steady and deep.
"The decryption is running at ninety-eight percent," the lead tech specialist announced, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard. "Audio logs, financial ledgers, video surveillance from the Queens construction site four years ago... it’s all here. Unredacted. Timestamped. Enough to put Costa and half his syndicate behind bars for the rest of their natural lives—or trigger a complete underworld war."
Antonio stood at the head of the table, his arms crossed over his chest, staring at the flashing data streams.
"We don't need the feds," Antonio said coldly. "In our world, federal prison is too clean for a rat like Costa. We settle this on our terms."
Ethan walked over to the table, stopping just feet from the mafia boss. The two men—one ruling the corporate towers of Manhattan, the other reigning over the shadows of its underworld—stood as uneasy allies bound by a three-year-old girl.
"You’re planning to walk right into his trap," Ethan stated, not as a question, but as an observation.
"It’s not a trap if we spring it first," Antonio replied, turning his dark gaze toward Ethan. "Costa thinks he’s holding all the cards because he has the leverage of history. But he made one fatal miscalculation."
"What’s that?"
"He forgot that a wounded wolf doesn't run from the pack," Antonio whispered, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "He hunts them down."
Before Ethan could answer, the secure communications console on the desk let out a sharp, piercing chirp.
Damen rushed over, tapping the receiver. He listened for three seconds, his face draining of all color. He looked up at Antonio, his voice tight with alarm.
"Boss... we just intercepted an outgoing encrypted transmission from one of Costa’s shell companies in Red Hook."
Antonio’s eyes narrowed. "Who is it addressed to?"
Damen swallowed hard. "It’s not an address, Antonio. It’s a broadcast frequency. Costa’s men have leaked a package to the federal strike force and every major media outlet in New York. They’ve tied your estate, the fourth-floor room, and the death of Julian Vance directly to your name. The police are already moving on the Seventy-Second Street mansion."
May you like
The room plunged into absolute silence. The war had just spilled out of the shadows and into the glaring light of the public eye, threatening to crush everything in its path.
Antonio stared at the console, his jaw locked so hard it looked carved from granite. But before he could issue an order, the heavy steel door of the logistics office shuddered under a massive, violent blow from the outside.
