Chapter 6 - The Weight of Blood

The sterile hum of the intensive care unit's heart monitor felt deafening in the charged silence of Room 412.

Antonio Moretti’s hand remained lingering near the interior pocket of his tailored black jacket, his dark, impenetrable eyes locked onto Ethan with the freezing precision of a sniper lining up a target. The air in the room was so thick with tension that it seemed to bend the light around them, turning the clinical white walls into the battleground of an unspoken war.

"You’re playing a very dangerous game, Sterling," Antonio’s voice was a low, resonant rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "Stepping into a family matter you don't understand. A retail tycoon playing white knight in a world where princes don't survive the night."

Ethan didn't blink, nor did he yield an inch of ground. He shifted his weight slightly, keeping his body positioned as a protective shield between the mafia boss and three-year-old Lily, who was tightly clutching the hem of his trousers.

"I run a multi-billion-dollar enterprise by understanding leverage, Antonio," Ethan fired back, his tone icy, carrying a steel backbone that caught the older man slightly off guard. "And right now, you’re standing in a public hospital room threatening a recovering mother and a terrified child. Your reputation for ruthlessness doesn't impress me when you're bullying a sickroom."

From the bed, Sarah struggled to push herself up against the pillows, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Her pale face was twisted in a mask of pure maternal terror.

"Don't you dare touch her, Antonio," Sarah hissed, her voice cracking but burning with a fierce, desperate defiance. "You killed Julian. You drove him off a building because he wanted out of your filthy life. You will not have his daughter."

Antonio’s jaw tightened, a muscle jumping sharply in his cheek. He took a slow, deliberate step forward, the sheer physical gravity of his presence commanding the space.

"Julian was my brother," Antonio said, his voice dropping an octave, heavy with a dark, suffocating sorrow that he masked behind lethal iron. "And he died because fools like you whispered poison in his ear, making him think he could walk away from a dynasty that protects its own in blood. I didn't kill him, Sarah. But the men who did—the rivals who thought they could chip away at the Moretti name by targeting my bloodline—are still breathing. And as long as this little girl carries my brother's face, she is the biggest target in New York."

Lily whimpered softly, burying her face against Ethan’s leg. "Mister... I want to go home."

Ethan looked down at the little girl, his heart twisting in a way no corporate merger or hostile takeover had ever managed. He looked back up at Antonio, his eyes narrowing into slits.

"If she’s a target," Ethan said coldly, "then she stays under my protection. Because whatever your family wars are, she walked into my store with eleven dollars and thirty-seven cents because her mother was dying alone. Where was your protection then, Antonio?"

Before Antonio could respond, the heavy glass door of the room slid open with a sharp click, and a tall, broad-shouldered man in a gray trench coat slipped inside, breathless and pale.

Damen Moretti leaned down and whispered something urgent into Antonio’s ear.

Antonio’s head snapped toward Damen, his dark eyes flashing with sudden, lethal realization. He turned back to Ethan and Sarah, his expression shifting from cold intimidation to absolute, razor-sharp focus.

"They know," Antonio whispered, his voice dangerously low. "Costa’s men just hit the private transit lane outside. They tracked me here. And they know there’s a second Moretti heir inside this hospital."
