Chapter 5 - The Hospital Room Visitor

The sterile white corridors of Saint Jude’s intensive care unit were dead quiet at midnight, save for the rhythmic, low beep of heart monitors and the soft squeak of rubber-soled shoes against linoleum.

Ethan strode down the hallway with long, purposeful strides, holding Lily’s small hand in his. He had woken her gently, explaining that they were going to see her mother. The little girl was groggy but alert, her yellow raincoat draped over Ethan’s arm like a banner of their bizarre, life-altering bond.

When they reached Room 412, Ethan stopped dead in his tracks.

The heavy oak door was wide open.

Inside, sitting in a leather armchair beside Sarah’s bed, was a man in a bespoke black suit, his broad shoulders filling the small space with an oppressive, dangerous gravity. A heavy silver ring gleamed on his right index finger, catching the fluorescent hospital light.

Sarah was propped up against the pillows, her face deathly pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce defiance as she clutched the hospital gown to her chest.

The man slowly turned his head toward the doorway.

Dark, impenetrable eyes locked onto Ethan. Then they dropped down to the little girl standing beside him.

Antonio Moretti didn't speak. He didn't have to. The sheer presence of the man filled the room with the terrifying weight of an empire that commanded life and death across the city.

"You’re a hard woman to find, Sarah," Antonio’s deep, gravelly voice cut through the quiet hum of the heart monitor like a blade. "Hiding my brother’s child in the slums of Queens. Did you really think you could keep my blood a secret forever?"

Lily tugged nervously on Ethan’s sleeve, hiding half her face behind his leg.

Ethan stepped forward, placing himself squarely between the most feared mafia boss in New York and the little girl who had walked into his store with eleven dollars and thirty-seven cents.

"Get away from her, Antonio," Ethan said, his voice dropping into an icy, unyielding register that matched the mob boss's glare step for step.

Antonio slowly stood up, towering over Ethan by two inches, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his severe face.

"You’ve got a lot of nerve, Sterling," Antonio whispered, his hand sliding casually toward his coat pocket. "Stepping between a grandfather and his blood. Let’s see how long that corporate backbone of yours holds up."
