Chapter 10 - The Price of Vengeance

"Don't you dare," Clara whispered.

The air in the kitchen dropped twenty degrees. Every maternal instinct, every ounce of grief, rage, and protective fury that had been building inside Clara since the day her son’s heart stopped beating suddenly coalesced into a single, terrifying point of focus.

She didn't scream. She didn't lunge blindly.

She took one slow, deliberate step forward.

"That album is the only physical archive of my son's first four years," Clara said, her voice frighteningly calm, carrying a weight that made Chloe hesitate. "You pour one drop of polish on those pages, Chloe, and I promise you—no federal prison, no restraining order, and no lawyer in this country will ever be able to protect you from what I will do to your life."

Chloe’s hand shook harder, the red polish hovering an inch above Leo’s smiling face in a snapshot from his third birthday party at the park.

"You think you're untouchable because you have money and a fancy lawyer!" Chloe sobbed hysterically, her grip slipping slightly on the bottle. "You had a perfect life! You had a husband, a house, a son—and my baby doesn't even have a father who wants him!"

"Your choices are your own, Chloe," Clara said, stepping closer still, her gaze locking onto Chloe's panicked eyes. "You made your bed. Now lie in it. Drop the bottle."

For a second, Chloe looked like she was going to tip the polish. Her fingers twitched over the open pages.

Then, the front smart-door lock clicked open with a sharp mechanical buzz.

Heavy boots echoed down the hardwood entryway.

"Clara? Everything alright in here?" Marcus Vance’s voice called out as he walked into the kitchen, flanked by two private security officers.

The moment Chloe heard Marcus's voice, her nerve completely shattered. She dropped the nail polish bottle onto the floor—it missed the album entirely, splattering dark red across the white tile—and slammed the leather album shut.

"You're a monster, Clara!" Chloe shrieked, turning and bolting past Marcus and the security guards toward the back patio sliding door.

"Don't let her touch the album!" Clara shouted.

The security officers moved instantly, intercepting Chloe by the sliding door and pinning her arms behind her back as she thrashed and screamed like a trapped animal.

Marcus stepped past them, picking up the closed photo album from the counter and handing it to Clara with a sympathetic nod. Clara clutched the leather book against her chest, her breathing finally beginning to steady as she watched Chloe being dragged out of the house.

"The police are on their way," Marcus said quietly. "She'll be processed for breaking and entering, stalking, and property vandalism."

Clara didn't answer right away. She walked over to the kitchen island, placed the album gently on the granite counter, and looked down at the small red puddle of nail polish staining the tile floor.

The storm had finally cleared. The house was hers. The money was returning. The betrayers were facing justice.

She picked up her phone, opened her messages, and scrolled past all the notifications from lawyers and banks until she found a short video file recorded six months ago—a video of Leo laughing uncontrollably while blowing out candles on a small blue cake.

Pressing play, she listened to the sweet, high-pitched sound of her son's laughter echoing through the quiet kitchen.

She closed her eyes, smiled through her tears, and whispered into the empty room.

"We won, my sweet boy. You're safe now."
