Chapter 7 - The Audit Trail

The morning sun cast pale, slanting rays across Marcus Vance’s downtown conference room by the time the financial analyst finished typing his final command.
Clara sat at the head of the long mahogany table, her eyes bloodshot from a second consecutive sleepless night. A half-empty cup of black coffee sat untouched beside her notepad. Marcus stood behind her chair, leaning over to look at the dual monitor setup displaying a complex web of offshore banking nodes.
"Well, Mr. Vance, Mrs. Sterling-Miller," the analyst, a quiet man named Thomas with wire-rimmed glasses, said as he pushed his chair back. "The wire transfer didn't just vanish into a generic Cayman account. It hit a tiered holding company called Meridian Trust."
"Meridian Trust?" Marcus frowned, crossing his arms. "That's a boutique asset management firm right here in Austin. They handle high-net-worth portfolios for local commercial real estate developers."
" Exactly," Thomas nodded, tapping a key to pull up corporate registry documents. "The primary managing partner of Meridian Trust isn't a faceless offshore entity. It's registered under a local individual who has deep business ties to your husband, Julian Miller."
Clara leaned forward, her heart skipping a beat. "Who?"
"A man named Richard Vance—no relation to you, counselor," Thomas said, glancing briefly at Marcus. "Richard is Julian’s primary silent partner in a commercial strip-mall development deal off Highway 290. And according to these state filings, Julian transferred fifty percent of his personal business equity to Richard just three days before your son's funeral."
The puzzle pieces violently slammed into place in Clara’s mind.
"He knew," Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy register. "Julian knew the marriage was over months ago. He knew he was going to push me out, and he set up a financial escape hatch using our joint commercial assets while I was sitting in the pediatric ICU watching Leo fight for breath."
"It's worse than that," Marcus added, his face grim. "If he transferred equity right before liquidating joint funds, it’s not just a messy divorce dispute. It’s premeditated financial fraud designed to strip-mine your separate property inheritance before you could file for an asset freeze."
"Can we claw it back?" Clara asked, her eyes narrowing with cold resolve.
"We can," Marcus replied, a predatory smile touching the corner of his mouth. "In fact, because the wire was initiated using a forged digital signature tied to your personal identity, we can file an emergency federal injunction for bank fraud, freeze every corporate asset Julian and his partners own within the state of Texas, and drag them into a deposition by tomorrow afternoon."

Clara stood up from the chair, smoothing down the front of her blazer. "Do it. And let’s start with Richard Vance."
