Chapter 9 - The Uninvited Guest at Elmwood Avenue

The sun had set, casting long, bruised shadows across the neighborhood as Clara’s car pulled back into the driveway of the Craftsman home on Elmwood Avenue.

She felt a strange sense of exhaustion mixed with fierce triumph. The bank accounts were frozen, the stolen funds were legally mandated to be returned by morning, and Julian was currently sitting in a holding room at Marcus’s office answering questions from federal investigators.

She walked up the front steps, unlocked the smart door, and stepped into the quiet, lemon-scented foyer.

The house felt peaceful. For the first time in days, the heavy, suffocating weight of the past seemed to lift just a fraction. She walked down the hall toward the kitchen to pour a glass of water before heading up to check on Leo’s room.

As she reached the kitchen doorway, she froze.

The overhead light was on—a light she distinctly remembered turning off before leaving that morning.

And sitting at the kitchen island, calmly sipping a cup of coffee from her favorite ceramic mug, was a woman Clara hadn't seen since the day of the funeral.

Chloe.

Her hair was tangled, her clothes wrinkled from sleeping in her car, but her eyes held a desperate, unhinged glint that made Clara’s skin crawl.

"How did you get in here?" Clara demanded, her hand instinctively dropping to her phone as she backed up toward the hallway wall.

Chloe didn't flinch. She took a slow sip of coffee, setting the mug down with a soft clink against the granite counter.

"Julian gave me the old garage code months ago," Chloe said, her voice flat, devoid of any warmth or shame. "He forgot to change it. Just like he forgot a lot of things."

"Get out of my house, Chloe," Clara said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. "I am not asking twice. My security team is already monitoring this property, and the police will be here in three minutes."

"Let them come," Chloe laughed bitterly, standing up slowly from the stool. She braced her hands against the counter, leaning forward with a look of manic desperation. "You think you won, don't you, Clara? You got the house. You got the money back. You kicked Julian to the curb like a stray dog."

"You betrayed your best friend while her child was dying," Clara fired back, her eyes burning with pure fury. "You deserve everything coming to you."

"I'm carrying his child, Clara!" Chloe screamed, her voice cracking as tears spilled over her lashes. "You think Julian is going to stick around and pay child support? He's broke! He's facing federal fraud charges because Richard threw him under the bus! And I have nowhere to go!"

"That is not my problem," Clara said, stepping toward the wall panel to trigger the security alarm.

"It is your problem," Chloe snarled, stepping around the island and reaching into her oversized leather handbag resting on the counter. "Because if I go down, I'm taking everything you love left in this world."

Before Clara could react, Chloe pulled a heavy, leather-bound photo album out of the bag—the special childhood album Clara had kept stored in the bottom of her cedar closet, containing every single picture of Leo from the day he was born.

Chloe pulled a bottle of dark red nail polish from her pocket, unscrewed the cap, and held it directly over the open pages of the album.

"One word, Clara," Chloe hissed, her hand trembling violently. "And I paint this entire book red."
