Chapter 5 - The Chessboard Turns

The silence in the fourth-floor corridor grew so dense that the hum of the vending machine down the hall sounded like a jet engine.

Arthur Vance stared at Evelyn, his jaw tightening into a hard, rigid line. The effortless, patrician charm he had worn like a tailored suit evaporated, replaced by the dangerous, calculating glare of a cornered predator.

"Incompetent amateurs," Arthur muttered under his breath, glaring at the printed sheet in my hand. He looked back up at me, his tone shifting from condescending to razor-sharp. "You think a piece of digital metadata from a compromised laptop holds up in federal court against a multi-billion-dollar trust? You're playing checkers, Mrs. Miller, while I own the entire board."

"Maybe," Calvin said, stepping smoothly into Arthur's line of sight, blocking him from me. "But right now, the board is being audited by the federal prosecutor's office. And your name happens to be at the top of the compliance queue."

Arthur sneered. "Prosecutors come and go, Calvin. Trusts remain."

Before Calvin could reply, the double doors at the end of the hall burst open once more.

This time, it wasn't a corporate lawyer or a police officer. It was a team of four emergency medical technicians pushing a mobile ICU gurney toward the elevator, accompanied by Dr. Patel.

On the gurney lay Holly, looking terrifyingly small beneath a white thermal blanket, an oxygen mask strapped over her face, her tiny fingers clutching the worn stuffed rabbit, Captain Bun.

My heart seized. I bolted past Arthur and his bodyguards, rushing to the side of the gurney as the team wheeled her toward the private elevator.

"Holly, sweetheart, I'm right here," I choked out, walking beside her, my hand resting gently on her arm.

Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy and pale, and she looked up at me through the clear plastic of the mask. A faint, weak squeeze of her fingers answered my touch.

Dr. Patel walked beside the gurney, his eyes fixed on the portable cardiac monitor strapped to the rail. "We're stable, Marissa. The transport chopper is waiting on the roof of the South Pavilion. We need to move now."

"Go," Calvin urged, appearing at my shoulder. "I'll handle the vulture in the hallway."

I nodded, turning to follow the gurney as it rolled toward the open elevator doors.

As we reached the threshold, Arthur’s voice cut through the commotion, cold and hard as steel.

"Enjoy your little helicopter ride, Mrs. Miller," Arthur called out, his voice laced with venom. "Because when you land in New York, you'll find out that the hospital, the doctors, and the entire wing you're checking into... belong to the Vanguard Trust."

I stopped in my tracks. I turned my head slowly, looking back down the corridor at him.

Arthur was standing tall, adjusting his cuffs with a predatory smile, confident that he had checkmated me once and for all.

He didn't know.

He didn't know what Calvin and my mother had set up eight years ago, long before Derek ever entered our lives.

I pulled my phone from my pocket, unlocked the screen with my thumb, and dialed a single, unlisted number that had been saved in my favorites since the day my mother passed away.

On the fourth ring, a deep, rasped voice answered.

"Vanguard Trust Legal Operations. This is Chief Counsel Vance-Rhodes."

I looked straight at Arthur across the hallway, raised the phone to my ear, and said, "This is Marissa Miller. Execute Protocol Zero against the Vanguard Trust immediately."
