Chapter 6 - Protocol Zero

The phone felt heavy against my ear, the silence on the line stretching for a fraction of a second before the deep, gravelly voice of Chief Counsel Richard Vance-Rhodes echoed back with absolute clarity.

"Protocol Zero, Mrs. Miller?" Richard repeated, his tone dropping from professional formality into something sharp, cold, and electric. "Are you authorizing the immediate dissolution and liquidation of all Vanguard Trust holdings, including the primary operating accounts?"

"Execute it," I said, my eyes locked onto Arthur Vance across the hospital corridor. "Right now."

"Consider it done," Richard replied. "All system overrides will propagate through the federal financial clearinghouse within sixty seconds."

I lowered the phone slowly, my hand steady, and slipped it back into my coat pocket.

Across the hall, Arthur was still smiling—a thin, cruel smirk of a man who believed he held all the cards. He took a step forward, raising his chin as if to deliver a final, crushing blow. "You're wasting your breath, Marissa. You can call whoever you like—"

He never finished the sentence.

A sharp, synchronized chiming sound erupted from the pockets of the two bodyguards standing behind Arthur. Then, a softer, continuous vibration rippled through Arthur’s own breast pocket.

Arthur frowned, breaking eye contact with me for the first time. He reached into his coat, pulled out his custom platinum smartphone, and glanced at the screen.

The color drained instantly from his face, leaving his skin the texture of spoiled milk.

"What... what is this?" Arthur muttered, his fingers trembling as he swiped frantically across the display. "Account frozen? Asset transfer suspended? Security breach override?"

"Protocol Zero, Arthur," I said, my voice cutting through the corridor like a scalpel.

Arthur’s head snapped up, his eyes bulging in sheer disbelief. "You... you don't have the authority. Vanguard Trust is a protected institutional entity! It requires a unanimous board vote to—"

"It required a unanimous vote twenty years ago," Calvin Rhodes chimed in, walking up beside me with a satisfied grin, adjusting his cuffs. "Back when your brother and Marissa’s mother wrote the original charter. But they inserted a single contingency clause, Arthur: if any board member or proxy attempted to weaponize trust assets against a lineal blood descendant of the founder, the entire trust automatically converts into an irrevocable liquidation fund controlled solely by the primary heir."

Arthur stared at Calvin, his chest heaving as reality crashed down on him. "No... no, that's impossible. That clause was sealed! It was buried in the legacy archive!"

"My mother kept her best secrets right where the wolves couldn't dig them up," I said, taking a slow step toward him. "You wanted to play corporate raider, Arthur? Welcome to liquidation."

Before Arthur could speak, his phone rang shrilly. He answered it with a shaking hand, holding it to his ear.

"Sir! Sir, you need to look at the terminal!" a frantic voice screamed through the speaker, loud enough for everyone in the hallway to hear. "All corporate credit lines have been revoked! The SEC just flagged our primary operating accounts for emergency audit! We're locked out of the system!"

Arthur lowered the phone slowly, his eyes wide and hollow.

At that exact moment, the private elevator chimed, signaling that the car carrying Holly and the medical team was ready to ascend to the roof.

"Have a nice evening, Arthur," I said softly.

I turned my back on him, stepped into the elevator, and as the doors slid shut, I watched the mighty corporate raider crumble into a terrified old man standing alone in the hallway.
