Chapter 8 - The Return of the Landlord

The morning sun cast a harsh, angled light across the manicured lawn of the suburban colonial.
The police tape was gone, but the heavy iron padlock on the front door was brand new, gleaming coldly in the daylight.
A black town car idled at the curb, its engine purring with quiet efficiency.
I stepped out of the back seat, wearing a tailored charcoal pantsuit and dark sunglasses. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, authoritative knot. The surgical staples in my abdomen still twitched with a dull reminder when I moved too quickly, but the weakness that had defined my steps two days ago was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, unyielding resolve.
Behind me, two private security guards hired by Vance-Rhodes stepped out of the vehicle, standing at attention.
As I walked up the paved driveway, the front door of the neighboring house clicked open. Mrs. Gable, our longtime neighbor who had spent five years pretending not to notice Agnes screaming at me through the open kitchen window, peered out from behind her sheer curtains.
I didn't look at her. I walked straight up the steps to the front porch, pulling a heavy brass key from my handbag.
The key slid into the deadbolt with a crisp, satisfying click.
I pushed the door open.
The smell hit me first—stale takeout, unwashed laundry, and the lingering, sour scent of panic. The house looked like a hurricane had swept through the living room. Pizza boxes were stacked knee-high on the coffee table, half-empty wine bottles littered the floor, and the kitchen island was buried under mounds of unopened mail and past-due utility notices.
They had left in such a hurry yesterday that they hadn't even bothered to take their coffee mugs out of the sink.
A muffled noise came from the upstairs hallway.
"Mom? Is that you?"
Footsteps padded hurriedly down the wooden stairs, and Chloe appeared around the corner, wrapped in an oversized bathrobe, her hair tangled and her eyes red-rimmed from crying.
She froze dead in her tracks when she saw me standing in the entryway.
The confusion on her face lasted for half a second before pure, venomous rage took its place.
"You!" Chloe shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at me. "What the hell are you doing in our house? Where are my mom and brother? What did you do to them?"
I didn't answer right away. I stepped slowly across the hardwood floor, my heels clicking with deliberate, measured precision, until I was standing right at the base of the stairs looking up at her.
"This isn't your house, Chloe," I said, my voice quiet, flat, and absolute. "It never was."
Chloe sneered, descending two steps to tower over me. "Oh, please! You think because you hired some high-priced lawyers while playing victim at the hospital that you actually own this place? Leo's name is on the mortgage! Mom lived here for ten years! You're just a parasite who married into—"
"Leo's name was on a mortgage backed by a fraudulent trust that was foreclosed at midnight," I interrupted smoothly, pulling a crisp, legal document from my briefcase and holding it up. "And your mother's residency permit was revoked yesterday afternoon when the municipal zoning board transferred the title to Sarah's Legacy LLC."
Chloe’s mouth dropped open. She snatched at the paper, but I pulled it back just out of reach.
"You have two hours, Chloe," I said, my gaze locking onto hers with a chilling intensity. "Pack your clothes, your phone chargers, and whatever plastic bags you can fit into that Honda Civic parked in the driveway. After that, my security team will clear the premises, and anything left behind goes into a dumpster on the curb."
Before Chloe could scream her first insult, the front door swung open wide behind me, and heavy footsteps filled the entryway.
Agnes pushed her way past the security guards, looking disheveled, wild-eyed, and desperate, her coat half-buttoned and her face twisted in a mask of absolute hatred.

"You little vulture!" Agnes screamed, lunging toward me with her fingernails clawed like talons. "I'll kill you! I swear to God, I'll tear your throat out!"
