Chapter 10 - The Breach in the Hallway

The emergency lights cast long, pulsating red shadows across the marble floors of the Moretti estate as the heavy doors at the end of the east wing splintered inward with a deafening crash.
"Hold the line!" Mateo shouted, dropping to one knee in the hallway just outside Elena’s suite, leveling his pistol through the doorway.
Two armed mercenaries in black tactical gear burst around the corner, their suppressed submachine guns barking a staccato rhythm of flashes. Chunks of plaster and carved mahogany exploded from the walls as Mateo returned fire, the deafening roar of gunfire echoing endlessly down the cavernous corridor.
Inside the suite, Elena pressed herself flat against the floor behind the heavy oak bed, shielding Emma’s small body beneath her own. The child was crying silently now, her face buried in her mother’s shoulder, clutching her stuffed bunny so hard her tiny knuckles were white.
"Mommy, make it stop!" Emma sobbed.
"I've got you, baby, I've got you," Elena whispered fiercely, tears streaming down her cheeks as the sound of boots stomped frantically across the outer room.
Suddenly, the connecting door to the private suite kicked open with a brutal snap.
A massive mercenary in body armor stepped through the threshold, his rifle raised, scanning the bedroom with cold, unblinking eyes through a tinted visor. His gaze immediately locked onto the bed where Elena and Emma were huddled.
"Found the package," the mercenary spoke into his shoulder comms, his voice distorted by a radio modulator. "Securing the target now."
He raised his rifle barrel toward Elena.
Before his finger could tighten on the trigger, the glass of the tall arched window behind him shattered in a blinding explosion of moonlight and flying shards. A dark, lethal shadow dropped silently from the stone ledge outside like an avenging angel.
Alesandro Moretti hit the floor rolling, his custom-fitted Sig Sauer already leveled.
Two rapid shots cracked through the room with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel. The mercenary seized violently, his rifle clattering to the floor as he collapsed backward, dead before he hit the carpet.
Alesandro didn't pause. He vaulted over the bed, his dark eyes blazing with an unmitigated, demonic fury as he swept his weapon toward the open doorway where Mateo was still exchanging fire with the remaining intruders.
"Mateo! Clear the wing!" Alesandro roared, his voice cutting through the ringing alarms like a thunderclap.
Alesandro dropped to one knee beside the bed, holstering his weapon in a single fluid motion, and reached out to pull Elena and Emma into his arms, shielding them against his chest. His heart hammered against his ribs, but his hands were steady as granite.
"Are you hit?" Alesandro demanded, his voice frantic beneath its iron shell as he checked Emma over.
"No—we're okay," Elena gasped, trembling violently. "How did you get back so fast?"
"I told you," Alesandro said, his dark gaze locking onto the shattered doorway, shadows dancing in his eyes as distant sirens began to wail outside the estate walls. "Nobody touches what belongs to me."
Before Elena could answer, the security intercom on the wall crackled to life, broadcasting a frantic voice from the front gates.

Alesandro slowly stood up, letting go of Elena’s hand, his expression hardening into something terrifyingly final.
