Chapter 9 - Eyes in the Garden

The private residential wing of the Moretti estate felt less like a home and more like a fortress within a fortress. Heavy velvet drapes blocked out the grey New York dawn, and the hallways were lined with silent, armed guards standing at rigid attention outside the newly assigned suites.
Inside her new room, Elena paced across the plush Persian rug, her hands clasped tightly together. The space was enormous—a master suite complete with antique mahogany furniture, private bath, and tall arched windows overlooking the walled-in rear gardens. Emma was sitting cross-legged on the massive velvet duvet, quietly playing with her stuffed bunny while humming a tuneless little song.
"Mommy, why do the men in suits stand outside the door?" Emma asked innocently, looking up with her big, clear eyes.
"They're just... helping us stay safe, sweetie," Elena said, offering a strained, reassuring smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. She walked over to the window, peering through a crack in the heavy drapes down toward the courtyard below.
The gardens looked peaceful under the morning mist, but an unsettling prickle of intuition crawled along the back of her neck.
A sharp knock echoed at the heavy oak door.
Elena froze. Before she could cross the room, the door clicked open, and Mateo Rossi stepped inside. His face was unusually pale, his usual swagger replaced by a taut, coiled tension that made Elena's stomach drop.
"Mrs. Carter," Mateo said quickly, keeping his voice low. "Pack a bag. Now."
"What?" Elena stepped backward, putting herself between Mateo and the bed where Emma sat. "What are you talking about? Mr. Moretti said we were safe here."
"The boss is still downtown at the Commission summit," Mateo said, pulling a heavy secure radio from his belt. "We just ran a deep sweep of the estate perimeter logs. Vincent had a secondary backup crew—mercenaries not registered on our payroll—smuggled into the service tunnels three days ago under a false maintenance order."
Elena’s blood ran cold. "Mercenaries?"
"They aren't here for the syndicate," Mateo said grimly, his eyes darting toward the hallway. "They're here to grab you and the child. Vincent knew he was going down, and he set a contingency plan. If he fell, he was going to take the boss's leverage."
Emma whimpered softly on the bed, picking up her pink rabbit backpack and clutching it against her chest. "Mommy, I'm scared."
"It's okay, baby, it's okay," Elena whispered, rushing over to scoop her daughter into her arms. She looked up at Mateo, panic clawing at her throat. "How do we get out? If the service tunnels are compromised, where can we go?"
"We don't go out," Mateo said, drawing his pistol and checking the magazine with a sharp click. "We hold the safe room behind the master bath. I've already triggered the estate lockdown. The primary gates are sealed."
Just as the words left his mouth, a dull, concussive thud echoed from deep within the lower levels of the estate, followed by the high-pitched, piercing wail of the internal security alarms.
Power flickered overhead, plunging the grand hallway into sudden, amber emergency lighting.

"They're inside," Mateo snarled, raising his weapon toward the open doorway.
