Chapter 5 - The Midnight Ultimatum

The moonlight caught the cold steel of the silenced pistol as Vincent Rossi stepped closer, his tailored suit jacket pushed back to reveal a shoulder holster. His face was twisted into an ugly, predatory sneer that bore no resemblance to the polished corporate banker he played across the boardroom table.

"You really thought you could slip in here, play nursemaid to the boss, and walk away with the keys to the kingdom?" Vincent hissed, taking another deliberate step forward. The gravel crunched under his polished leather shoes. "Alesandro is slipping. A man who nearly dies from a peanut allergy isn't fit to run a syndicate. And a maid who picks up his slack is a loose end I don't intend to leave dangling."

Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She kept her hand clamped tightly over the heavy silver signet ring in her jacket pocket, her mind racing desperately for an escape route. The service door was twenty feet behind her, but with a gun pointed at her chest, she wouldn't make it two steps before a bullet found her spine.

"I don't care about your syndicate," Elena said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to keep it steady. "I don't care about the money, the docks, or the wars. Just let us go."

"Ignorance isn't an excuse when you're standing in the middle of a war zone," Vincent snapped, raising the barrel of the gun slightly so it aimed squarely between her eyes. "Now, take the ring out of your pocket with two fingers and drop it on the gravel. Slowly."

Elena’s fingers trembled inside her pocket. She touched the cold metal of the falcon crest. She thought of Emma sleeping safely in the east wing, trusting her mother to protect her. She couldn't surrender the one thing that gave them a shred of leverage, but she couldn't let herself be executed in a dark courtyard either.

Before she could move, a sharp, metallic sound rang out from the shadows above the garden terrace.

Click.

It wasn't the sound of a pistol. It was the distinct, unmistakable rack of a pump-action shotgun.

"Drop the weapon, Vincent," a voice echoed through the cold night air—flat, calm, and dripping with a lethal, suffocating menace.

Vincent’s head snapped toward the terrace stairs.

Standing half-shrouded in the darkness of the second-story balcony, illuminated only by the pale amber glow of a wall sconce, was Alesandro Moretti. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket; his white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, and his forearms were corded with muscle as he leveled a 12-gauge shotgun directly at Vincent’s chest with casual, terrifying precision.

"Alesandro," Vincent choked out, his facade of cool confidence cracking instantly, sweat beading instantly along his hairline. "Boss—wait. I was just—she’s a liability, she was trying to steal—"

"She doesn't even know what a syndicate is, Vincent," Alesandro interrupted, his voice cold enough to shatter glass. He stepped forward onto the edge of the balcony, resting the barrel of the shotgun against the wrought-iron railing. "You, on the other hand, know exactly what happens to rats who try to scavenge in my house while I'm still breathing."

Vincent’s eyes darted frantically between the shotgun barrel and the dark, empty corners of the courtyard where invisible guards were undoubtedly closing in from every side. He slowly lowered his pistol an inch, his fingers twitching near the trigger, desperate for a fraction of a second to turn the tables.

"Make a move," Alesandro whispered softly into the night, his dark eyes narrowing with unmitigated fury. "And let’s see if your gun is faster than mine."
