Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Circle

Tony and the enforcers swarmed the room instantly. Two men tackled Dante, pinning him face-first into the splintered floor while a third kicked the pistol away into the corner.

Matteo crossed the room in two giant strides, dropping to his knees beside Norah. With quick, practiced fingers, he sliced through the plastic zip-ties binding her small wrists to the chair.

"You're safe," Matteo murmured, scooping her up into his arms before she could hit the floor.

Norah buried her face into the shoulder of his tactical fleece, sobbing uncontrollably. "I... I didn't mean to lose the key. They took it from my pocket."

"It doesn't matter," Matteo said, his voice cracking slightly as he held her tight against his chest, feeling the frantic beating of her little heart. "You're safe now. I've got you."

He stood up, carrying her toward the door where Tony was hauling a bleeding, cursing Dante Moretti to his feet.

"Boss," Tony asked, wiping soot from his forehead. "What do we do with him?"

Matteo looked at his uncle—a man who had betrayed his blood, murdered his niece, and terrified an innocent child—with cold, absolute indifference.

"Lock him in the same cell as Calvin," Matteo said quietly. "Let them share stories about how they stole an empire that didn't belong to them."

An hour later, the black armored convoy pulled through the wrought-iron gates of the Moretti estate. The fog had lifted, revealing a cold, starlit Chicago sky breaking over the gothic brick towers.

Matteo carried a sleeping Norah up the grand stone steps, gently opening the heavy front doors. Inside, the nurse he had hired was waiting in the foyer, holding a freshly fed Noah and Eli wrapped in soft blue blankets.

"How is she?" the nurse whispered, stepping forward.

"She's resting," Matteo replied, carefully transferring Norah into the nurse's waiting arms. "Put her in the adjoining suite to the twins. And make sure the security detail is doubled on this floor."

He walked alone down the dimly lit hallway toward the north wing, his boots echoing softly against the hardwood. Stopping outside Lucia’s locked bedroom door, he pulled the scratched silver key—retrieved from Dante's pocket at the docks—from his tactical belt.

He slid the key into the tarnished brass lock. It turned with a smooth, effortless click.

Stepping inside, the room smelled no longer of dust and forgotten grief, but of a slate wiped clean. Matteo walked over to the open safe behind the portrait, placed the black recovery ledger inside alongside Lucia’s silver ring, and slowly closed the heavy steel door.

The war for the estate was over. But as he looked out the window toward the hospital lights twinkling in the distance where Grace was fighting her way back to health, Matteo knew the real work had just begun.
