Chapter 5 - Behind the Portrait

The north wing smelled of dust, old lavender, and absolute silence.
The heavy mahogany doors had remained locked for over a decade, the brass handles tarnished and cold to the touch. Matteo shoved Calvin forward down the dimly lit hallway, his grip locked tight around the manager's collar.
"Unlock it," Matteo ordered, pressing the silver key into Calvin’s shaking, sweaty palm.
Calvin’s hands trembled so violently he dropped the key twice before finally aligning it with the ornate keyhole hidden behind the decorative wood molding. With a heavy, echoing clack, the deadbolt turned.
The door swung inward, revealing Lucia’s bedroom exactly as it had been left twelve years ago. A canopy bed draped in white lace, a vanity table covered in abandoned perfume bottles, and a large, oil-painted portrait of Lucia smiling gently down at the room, her amber eyes—so like Matteo’s—holding an eternal, haunting sorrow.
"Here," Calvin choked out, pointing a trembling finger toward the heavy portrait on the far wall. "Behind the frame. There’s a spring release on the lower left corner."
Matteo kept one hand on Calvin’s throat, his eyes never leaving the manager's face, while he reached out with his free hand and pressed the carved wooden corner of the frame.
With a soft pneumatic hiss, the massive portrait swung outward on concealed hinges, revealing a heavy steel wall safe set directly into the brickwork.
"The combination," Matteo demanded.
"I don't know it!" Calvin gasped. "Only Miss Lucia and your father knew the master combination!"
Matteo stared at the safe's digital dial. Beneath the keypad was a small, scratched brass plaque bearing a date: 10.14.88.
Lucia’s birthday.
Matteo reached out and punched in the numbers with steady, deliberate precision.
Click. Whir.
The heavy steel door popped open.
Inside sat no gold, no jewels, and no sentimental trinkets. There was only a thick, leather-bound black ledger stamped with the seal of Moretti Holdings, alongside a stack of legal documents bearing signatures that were undeniably forged.
Matteo reached inside, pulled out the ledger, and flipped it open to the bookmarked page.
The numbers detailed a systematic, multi-million-dollar asset drain executed over the course of three years following Lucia’s death—all funneled through shell accounts controlled by Calvin Mercer and a secondary network operating out of Chicago.

And right there, scrawled in the margin of the final page in Lucia’s familiar, elegant handwriting, was a sentence that made Matteo’s blood freeze solid:
If I die, Calvin did it. Tell Matteo.
