Chapter 8 - The Siege at Pier 44

The black armored SUV tore through the midnight fog of the South Chicago industrial district, its headlights cutting jagged beams through the heavy mist rolling off Lake Michigan.

In the back seat, Matteo sat in absolute, terrifying silence. His fingers checked the magazine of his sub-compact tactical rifle, clicking each round into place with mechanical precision. The gold-and-black lion ring on his right hand gleamed under the dashboard's dim amber glow.

They had taken Norah.

A little girl who had balanced two starving newborn infants in her frail arms while begging for baby formula. A child who had worn his dead sister's key on a red string because her mother trusted the man with the black lion ring.

"Boss," Tony said from the front passenger seat, checking his own tactical gear via the rearview mirror. "We have twenty men deployed in a perimeter sweep around Pier 44. Dante’s mercs are dug in behind shipping containers in Sector C. They've got the girl inside the harbor master's office."

"No sniper shots," Matteo ordered, his voice dropping into a register colder than the winter wind outside. "I want Dante alive. And I want Noraged out of that office before the first round is fired."

"Understood. Breach and clear."

The SUV cut its headlights a quarter-mile from the gates, rolling in absolute darkness before slamming to a halt beside a towering stack of rusted steel shipping containers.

The air smelled of salt water, diesel exhaust, and raw ozone.

Matteo stepped out into the freezing night, his heavy boots hitting the gravel. Behind him, eighteen elite syndicate enforcers fanned out like shadows, their suppressed weapons locked and loaded.

At the center of Pier 44 sat the harbor master's office—a two-story brick building with glowing windows and armed sentries patrolling the perimeter chain-link fence. Through the second-story reinforced glass window, Matteo could clearly see a small, terrified figure tied to a wooden chair, her red cardigan stark against the dreary industrial background.

Norah.

A heavy-set man in an expensive white trench coat stood beside her, holding a silver pocket watch by its chain—Dante Moretti.

"Move in," Matteo whispered into his comms mic.
