Chapter 5 - The Heir to Vanguard

Robert stepped out into the hallway, pulling the door to the guest suite shut to avoid waking the sleeping boy. The harsh light of the morning sun was just beginning to filter through the high windows of the corridor.

"What are you talking about, Marcus?" Robert asked, lowering his voice as he looked down at the tablet screen.

The display showed a digital news clipping from a financial journal dated four years ago. The headline read: Tragedy in Tribeca: Prominent Tech Innovator and Wife Die in Suspicious Fire. Below the headline was a photograph of a smiling couple standing next to a toddler. The man in the photo had the same distinct shape of jaw and deep-set brown eyes as the boy sleeping inside the room.

"That's not just a stray orphan, Robert," Marcus said, his voice dropping to an urgent whisper. "That's Samuel Sterling Jr. The sole surviving heir to Sterling Technologies."

Robert’s breath caught in his throat. The name echoed in his mind, carrying a devastating weight. Sterling. As in Victoria Sterling. The ruthless CEO of Vanguard Capital—and the bitter rival attempting a hostile takeover of Ellington Enterprises.

"Sterling..." Elizabeth murmured, wheeling closer, her eyes widening as she read the text on the tablet. "Victoria Sterling’s nephew? Or..."

"Grandson," Marcus corrected grimly. "When his parents died in that 'accident' four years ago, control of the massive Sterling patent portfolio went into a trust managed by Victoria herself. But under the original terms drafted by Samuel Sr., the entire estate—billions in unreleased tech patents and liquid assets—reverts completely to the direct bloodline heir on his tenth birthday."

Robert stared at the tablet screen, the pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in his mind with the force of a freight train. "And today is his tenth birthday."

"Oh, my God," Elizabeth gasped, her hands flying to her mouth. "That's why he was dropped off here. It wasn't a coincidence. It wasn't corporate espionage from Vanguard... it was a hit."

"What do you mean, a hit?" Robert demanded, grabbing Marcus by the lapels of his jacket.

"Think about it, Boss," Marcus said urgently, his eyes darting down the hallway. "If Samuel Jr. dies before midnight tonight, the entire multi-billion-dollar trust defaults permanently to the corporate foundation—which Victoria Sterling controls outright. She didn't want to use him as a spy against you. She wanted to smuggle him onto your property, let him freeze or disappear in Westchester, and ensure that when his body is found on billionaire Robert Ellington's manicured lawn, the police investigation points straight to foul play or neglect by you."

The blood rushed in Robert’s ears. The luxury, the opulence, the towering wrought-iron gates of Ellington Manor suddenly felt less like a sanctuary and more like a cage designed to trap them all.

Before Robert could process the horrific implications, a sharp, piercing sound shattered the morning quiet.

It wasn't an alarm, and it wasn't the front doorbell.

It was the electronic security system chimes ringing through the entire mansion, accompanied by the harsh red flashing of the perimeter breach lights.

Marcus instinctively drew his concealed sidearm, his eyes locking onto the security monitor mounted near the end of the hall. "Boss. Multiple unmarked black SUVs just breached the front gates. They're bypassing the security grid entirely."

Robert spun around, staring at the closed door of the guest suite where Sam lay helpless and burning with fever, just as the heavy front doors downstairs blew open with a deafening crash of splintering wood.
