Chapter 6 - The Breach

The sound of splintering mahogany echoed upward through the soaring stairwell like a physical blow.

Marcus Vance shoved Robert back toward the guest suite, his weapon drawn and safety clicked off with a sharp metallic snap. "Get inside. Lock the heavy bolt from the inside and do not open it for anyone. Move, boss!"

"I'm not hiding while our home is being invaded," Robert snarled, his jaw tight as he reached for a heavy brass fireplace poker sitting near the decorative corridor alcove.

"Robert, listen to Marcus!" Elizabeth pleaded, her face devoid of color as she rapidly spun her wheelchair around to block the doorway. "Sam is in there, defenseless and sick. If they want him dead before midnight, they won't hesitate to clear every room in this house to find him!"

Heavy, synchronized boots slammed against the marble flooring of the grand foyer far below, followed by crisp, chillingly professional military commands. These weren't local street thugs or common burglars; they were elite, private paramilitary contractors wearing unmarked tactical gear, moving with ruthless, methodical speed.

"Sector One is clean. Sweep the north wing," a harsh, distorted voice barked through a tactical radio downstairs.

"They're coming up the main staircase," Marcus said, his eyes darting to the hallway security monitor. Three distinct thermal shapes were already ascending the sweeping marble steps, ignoring the ground-floor drawing rooms entirely. They had blueprints. They knew exactly where the master suite and the guest wing were located.

"Maria," Elizabeth gasped suddenly, her eyes widening in absolute horror. "She's in the kitchen preparing Sam's medicine. She doesn't know."

Robert’s blood ran cold. "Marcus, cover this corridor. I'm going down the service stairs to find Maria."

"Boss, you step out that door and you're a target!" Marcus warned, but Robert had already turned, his fingers gripping the cold brass of the service door.

Before he could pull it open, the wall beside his head exploded in a shower of drywall dust and flying splinters. A silenced round punched clean through the lath and plaster, hissing past his ear.

"They're shooting through the walls!" Marcus shouted, returning fire down the corridor with two controlled pops from his Sig Sauer, the muzzle flash illuminating the dim hallway in strobe-like bursts. "Get back! Get inside the room now!"

Dragged backward by Elizabeth's urgent grip and Marcus's covering fire, Robert stumbled through the doorway of the guest suite just as a heavy sustained burst of suppressed automatic gunfire chewed up the outer corridor molding. Marcus slammed the heavy oak door shut, throwing the deadbolts and sliding the steel security bar into place.

Inside the dim, quiet bedroom, the air smelled faintly of eucalyptus and medicine. Sam stirred restlessly beneath the heavy duvet, his brow slick with fever sweat, completely oblivious to the war zone unfolding outside his door.

"Marcus, we're trapped," Robert said, his chest heaving as he scanned the room. The windows faced a fifty-foot drop down to the stone patio below.

"Not yet," Marcus muttered, holstering his weapon for a second to pull a specialized electronic override key from his tactical vest and jam it into the room's smart-home automation panel. "The guest suite has a reinforced panic room built into the walk-in wardrobe. Engineered by the previous owner. If we get him inside, they'll have to cut through six inches of solid reinforced steel."

Heavy boots thudded against the hallway floor right outside the guest suite door. Someone slammed shoulder-first against the wood, the frame groaning under the brutal impact.
