Chapter 8 - The Sinking Foundation

Hours bled into a tense, suffocating eternity inside the vault. On the internal security monitor—fed by hidden pinhole lenses scattered throughout the manor—Robert, Elizabeth, and Marcus watched the tactical team move methodically through the mansion.
They weren't looting. They weren't ransacking the priceless art or stealing valuables from the drawing rooms. They were systematically clearing every room, ripping open closets, and systematically tearing apart the east and west wings. They were searching for something specific, or perhaps waiting patiently for the occupants to suffocate or surrender.
"They've set up a perimeter in the main hallway," Marcus noted quietly, pointing to a thermal feed showing three heat signatures stationed just outside the guest suite. "They know we're in the vault. They're treating this like a siege."
On the cot, Sam let out a low, pained groan, his small body wracked by a sudden, violent shiver. He curled tighter into a ball, his lips dry and cracked.
"Water," Sam whispered hoarsely, his eyes half-closed. "Please... cold water..."
Elizabeth wheeled herself forward, her expression softening into a deep, agonizing maternal sorrow that she had buried away for years. She reached into the vault's emergency rations cabinet, pulled out a small bottled water, and unscrewed the cap. Carefully, she dipped a clean gauze pad into the water and pressed it against Sam's chapped lips.
"Easy, sweetie. Just a little sip," Elizabeth murmured, her voice trembling slightly. She looked up at Robert, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "We can't just sit here and wait for them to starve us out, Robert. Look at him. He's fading."
Robert stared at the security monitor. The clock in the corner of the screen ticked relentlessly forward: 11:42 AM. Only twelve hours until midnight—the deadline when Sam’s multi-billion-dollar trust defaulted entirely to Victoria Sterling.
"Marcus," Robert said slowly, a dangerous resolve hardening in his eyes. "How many men are actively on this floor?"
"Three outside the door, two sweeping the service wing," Marcus replied, narrowing his eyes. "Why? What are you thinking, boss?"
"I'm thinking we don't wait for them to break in," Robert said, standing up tall inside the cramped vault. "We create a diversion. We use the old estate pneumatic intercom system to route a feedback loop through the intercom speakers downstairs, pulling their team toward the opposite end of the house. Then you and I pop the emergency ventilation hatch in the floor of the guest bath."
"The old coal chute?" Marcus raised an eyebrow. "It vents out into the root cellar behind the wine caves. It's tight, but... yeah, it leads straight outside the main perimeter wall near the old stables."
"Exactly," Robert said. "You take Sam and Liz through the chute. Get them off the property to a secure safehouse."
May you like
"And you?" Elizabeth demanded sharply, wheeling her chair forward to block his path, her voice rising in panic. "What about you, Robert?"
"I'm going to walk out the front door," Robert said calmly, a chilling smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Victoria Sterling wants a war? I'm going to give her one. Let her explain to the federal authorities why a private paramilitary hit squad invaded a Westchester estate to eliminate a ten-year-old orphan on his birthday."
