Chapter 3 - The First Ally

“I’m safe,” I managed to croak out, my voice cracking from dehydration and terror. I clutched Noah tighter against my chest, stepping out of the bathroom threshold. “But he has my keys. They took them so we couldn't leave.”

Caleb’s face contorted into an expression of profound betrayal. “Officer, don't listen to her! She’s delusional! Look at my leg! She hit me with a wooden stool unprovoked because I asked her to help me quiet the baby!”

“Shut your mouth, sir,” the second officer, a female cop with sharp eyes and a commanding presence, snapped as she stepped into the hallway from the living room. She took in the scene—the splintered bathroom door frame, Evelyn’s panicked posture, Caleb’s theatrical performance, and my bruised, exhausted state.

She walked straight toward me, bypassing Caleb entirely. “Ma’am, I’m Officer Jensen. Can I take the baby for just a second while you catch your breath?”

I hesitated, my protective instincts flaring, but I saw the genuine empathy in her eyes. I gently transferred Noah into her steady, practiced arms. The moment the baby left my chest, a sob hitched in my throat, but Officer Jensen moved with such calm authority that I immediately felt a fraction of the weight lift off my shoulders.

“Officer, this is ridiculous!” Caleb shouted, stepping forward, though the first male officer immediately stepped into his path, placing a hand firmly against Caleb’s chest. “She’s the aggressor! I want her arrested for domestic assault!”

“Sir, take two steps back and keep your hands where I can see them,” the male officer warned, his voice low and dangerous.

Officer Jensen looked down at my arm, her gaze lingering on the blue hospital wristband and the dark purple bruising blooming across my skin. “When were you discharged, ma’am?”

“Three days ago,” I whispered.

“And how did you get those bruises on your arm and face?”

Before I could answer, Evelyn pushed past Caleb, her face flushed with indignation. “She bruises like a peach! She’s clumsy, she trips over things in the dark because she’s sleep-deprived! And she flew into a hysterical rage because Caleb asked her to change a diaper!”

“Ma’am, I wasn't asking you,” Officer Jensen said coldly, never breaking eye contact with me. “Elena, tell me what happened.”

I took a deep, shuddering breath. I looked at Caleb—the man I had trusted for a decade, the man who had whispered sweet nothingness into my ear while I labored for twenty-four hours—and I finally found my voice.

“He dragged me out of the bathroom by my hair while I was on the toilet,” I said, my voice echoing clearly down the hallway. “He slammed my shoulder into the doorframe because the baby woke him up. His mother threw my newborn onto a pile of blankets. When I fought them off to get to my son and locked the door, they took my keys so we couldn't escape.”

Caleb went completely white. “You’re insane! You’re making it all up!”

“Officer,” I said, looking straight at Officer Jensen with absolute resolve. “Check the hallway doorframe. You’ll find my hair and skin fibers right where he slammed me.”
