Chapter 4 - The House of Cards

Officer Jensen didn't hesitate. She stepped past Caleb, examining the splintered wood of the bathroom door and the exact angle of the adjacent hallway frame.
“Officer, you can't just search my house without a warrant based on the word of a hysterical woman—!” Caleb stammered, his facade finally cracking under the weight of undeniable physical evidence.
“Sir, step back,” Officer Jensen interrupted sharply, shining her tactical flashlight directly against the doorframe.
Sure enough, caught in the jagged splintered grain of the wood right at shoulder height, a small tuft of dark brown hair and a faint smear of dried blood were clearly visible. The visual proof of violent impact completely dismantled Caleb’s narrative of a purely defensive husband dealing with an erratic wife.
The male officer standing guard over Caleb shifted his posture, his hand tightening near his handcuffs. “Mr. Carter, turn around and put your hands behind your back.”
“What?! Are you out of your mind?!” Caleb yelled, trying to twist away as the officer grabbed his arm, spinning him around and slamming him gently but firmly against the hallway wall. “Mom! Call our lawyer! Call the firm!”
Evelyn rushed forward, screeching like a wounded bird. “You can't arrest him! You have no right! She attacked him first with that stool!”
“Ma’am, if you take one more step toward my partner, you’re going to jail right along with your son for obstruction,” Officer Jensen warned, her voice cutting through the air like a razor. She turned back to me, her expression softening as she handed Noah safely back into my trembling arms.
I pulled my baby against my chest, burying my face in his soft blanket as tears finally broke free, streaming hot down my bruised cheeks.
“Elena, I’m going to call an ambulance to check out that shoulder and your face,” Officer Jensen said gently. “And we are going to file an emergency order of protection. You don't have to stay here tonight.”
Caleb was cuffed and led down the hallway, cursing under his breath, glaring at me with eyes full of pure, venomous hatred. Evelyn was screaming threats about lawsuits, corruption, and ruining our lives, her voice fading as the officers escorted them toward the front door.
As the front door clicked shut, leaving only the two responding officers and me in the quiet living room, a profound, terrifying emptiness settled over the house.
I looked down at Noah. He was sleeping peacefully now, completely oblivious to the war that had just been waged over his cradle.

Officer Jensen knelt beside me on the rug, handing me a clean tissue. “You’re stronger than you know, Elena. But this is only the beginning. Once he posts bail, things are going to get very difficult.”
A cold dread pooled in my stomach. She was right. Caleb had money, a high-paying corporate job, and a network of affluent family connections. He wasn't going to let me walk away quietly.
