Chapter 8 - The Intruder in the Hallway

The heavy front door swung inward with a soft, ominous groan.

I crouched beside the bathroom tub, my hand clamped firmly over my own mouth to suppress my breathing. Noah stirred slightly in his bassinet, letting out a tiny, soft sigh, and I squeezed my eyes shut, praying to every power in the universe that he wouldn't cry out.

Heavy, cautious footsteps padded across the entryway hardwood.

Thud. Thud.

The intruder wasn't trying to hide their presence anymore; they were moving with the heavy, purposeful stride of someone who believed the house was entirely empty. The footsteps moved from the foyer into the living room, then paused right at the base of the stairs.

A floorboard groaned loudly as weight shifted onto the first step.

Creak.

They were coming upstairs.

My hand fumbled blindly across the bathroom floor until my fingers brushed against a heavy glass bottle of lotion on the counter. I gripped it tight, my knuckles whitening, preparing to swing with every ounce of strength left in my battered body if that door handle turned.

The footsteps reached the top of the landing. They paused right outside the master bedroom door.

A low, raspy whisper echoed down the hall.

“Caleb said she left it on the kitchen counter... check the drawers.”

It wasn't Caleb. It wasn't Evelyn. It was a strange, gravelly voice—a man speaking in a hushed, professional tone, sounding like a hired operative rather than an enraged family member.

The footsteps moved past the master bedroom, heading down toward the kitchen.

I waited, listening as drawers were pulled open and papers were rustled downstairs. After what felt like an eternity, a heavy front door slammed shut, followed by the low, rumbling roar of a car engine peeling out of the cul-de-sac and disappearing down the street.

I stayed frozen on the bathroom floor for twenty more minutes, my muscles locked in agonizing tension, until the silence of the night settled back over the house.

When I finally opened the bathroom door and crept downstairs to check, the kitchen island was ransacked. The spare set of car keys, the physical folder containing our marriage certificate, and my backup tax documents were entirely gone.
