Chapter 3 - The Leak in the Ledger

The name ATF hung in the air between us like a physical blow. For fifteen years, my operation had survived federal scrutiny not through luck, but through absolute discipline, firewall security, and a web of legitimate logistics fronts that made it impossible to trace cargo back to my private network.

"Are you sure?" I asked, keeping my eyes locked on Vanessa, whose triumphant smirk faltered slightly at the dark shift in my tone.

"Positive," Marcus replied, his breathing heavy over the secure line. "The federal agent leading the audit is a guy named Keller. He didn't just get a tip, boss. He got the exact encryption keys to our master server. The only people who had access to that thumb drive in the home safe are you, your personal assistant, and..." Marcus paused, his voice dropping an octave. "And Miss Cole."

Vanessa’s smirk vanished entirely. She took a half-step back, her hands flying to her mouth. "What? What are you looking at me like that for?"

I hung up the phone without saying goodbye to Marcus, sliding the device slowly back into my pocket. The silence in the drawing room returned, heavier and darker than before.

"You didn't just lose a diamond bracelet today, did you, Vanessa?" I asked softly, walking toward her.

She backed up until her shoulders hit the mahogany bookcase, her eyes wide with genuine terror. "I don't know what you're talking about! Daniel, you're scaring me—"

"Stop playing the victim," I said, my voice cutting through her performance. "For two years, you played the part of the woman who made my chaotic life feel ordinary. You smiled at my associates, you wore my ring, and all the while, you were quietly siphoning data from my home office safe to build an exit strategy. Who is buying the freight routes, Vanessa? Is it the Syndicate out of Atlanta, or did you partner with local enforcement to cut me out?"

Grace quietly set the silver tray down on the sideboard. She didn't make a sound, but she didn't leave the room either. She stood near the doorway, a silent witness to the dismantling of the life I had built.

Vanessa’s facade cracked completely. The tears returned, but this time they were hot, angry, and desperate. "You think you're untouchable, Daniel! You think because you sit on your throne in Charlotte, nobody can touch you! You spend your whole life dealing in blood and threats, treating people like chess pieces! I wasn't going to let you drag me down when the feds finally kick your front door in!"

"When did you make the deal?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

"Three months ago," she spat, her mask of elegance completely burned away. "Before you even proposed. I had an investigator look into your father's death, Daniel. I know how you got your start. I know what you’re hiding in those warehouses. I wasn't going to be the trophy wife of a dead man walking."

She lunged past me toward the hallway, desperate to reach the front door and escape into the night.

"Grace," I said without turning around.

Grace didn't hesitate. With a swift, fluid motion, she stepped into the hallway, blocked Vanessa’s path with a heavy oak chair, and calmly slid the bolt on the front door.

Vanessa slammed her fists against the wood. "Let me out of here! This is kidnapping! You can't keep me here!"

"I'm not keeping you anywhere," I said, walking slowly up behind her until she could feel the heat of my presence against her back. I leaned in close, my lips brushing her ear. "We’re just going to wait for Agent Keller to arrive. Because unlike you, Vanessa, I believe in finishing a conversation."
