Chapter 5 - The Ledger in the Safe

Keller’s expression hardened, his professional calm slipping just enough to show the irritation beneath. "Spare me the philosophy, Whitfield. We have the server logs. We have Miss Cole's testimony. We have enough to turn this house upside down with a sledgehammer if we have to."

"By all means," I said, gesturing toward the heavy iron-reinforced door of my home office at the end of the hall. "Feel free to use a sledgehammer. But before you tear my molding apart, you might want to look at what's actually stored on the primary drive inside that safe."

Vanessa laughed, a high, jittery sound born of pure adrenaline. "He’s bluffing, Keller! He’s just trying to buy time to wipe the drives!"

"Miss Cole," I said, turning my gaze fully onto her for the first time since the agents walked in. "Did you actually open the master safe, or did you just copy the decoy partition I set up six months ago for corporate espionage audits?"

Her breath caught. The triumphant light in her eyes flickered and died. "I... I used the keycard from your desk."

"The keycard I gave you access to last month," I finished for her. "The one programmed with guest-level credentials that only show what I want them to show. Every transaction you downloaded to hand over to the federal government doesn't point to my syndicate, Vanessa. It points directly to Meridian Holdings—the exact parent company your new friends in Atlanta use to clean their money."

Keller’s head snapped toward Vanessa. His eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "Is that true, Miss Cole? You told us those files were direct operational logs from Whitfield's internal network."

"He's lying!" Vanessa shrieked, lunging forward before the tactical agents could grab her arms. "Look at him! He's a monster! He controls the freight lines! He has men in every warehouse from here to Savannah!"

"I control legitimate logistics," I corrected her calmly, stepping past Keller to pick up the diamond bracelet from the table. I held it out toward Grace, who had quietly walked up behind the federal agents.

Grace looked at the sparkling platinum in my hand, then up at my face. She didn't take it.

"Keep it," I said quietly, my voice meant only for her. "Hazard pay for cleaning up the mess."

Grace gave a single, almost imperceptible nod.

Keller’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, frowning as he glanced down at the screen. The encrypted tactical channel was lighting up with urgent updates from his own downtown bureau.

Keller swiped to answer, pressing the phone to his ear. "Keller. Go ahead."

We watched him. The color slowly drained from the federal agent's face as a voice on the other end spoke at rapid speed. Keller didn't say a word for nearly thirty seconds. When he finally lowered the phone, his hand was trembling slightly.

He looked at me with an expression that was no longer professional condescension—it was absolute, unfiltered shock.

"The Atlanta server logs..." Keller whispered, his voice dry. "They just triggered an automated tripwire across three federal jurisdictions. We didn't uncover Whitfield's operation, Captain. We just walked straight into a federal trap designed to expose Meridian Holdings."

Vanessa stumbled backward, her legs giving out beneath her as she hit the floor of the foyer, staring up at Keller in absolute horror. "No... that's impossible. I checked the numbers..."

I stepped over the threshold of the office, turning back to look at the three federal agents, my brother's warning echoing in my mind, and the memory of my father's final words settling over the room like a shroud.

"You never know who loves you when the room is beautiful," I said softly into the quiet foyer, sliding my hand into my pocket. "You only find out when something breaks."

Keller stared at me, his mouth opening to speak, but before he could utter a single word, the heavy security gates outside the front iron fence slammed shut with a metallic crash, locking us all inside.
