Chapter 6 - The Iron Gate

The heavy metallic crash of the outer security gates slamming shut echoed through the foyer like a gunshot. The automatic deadbolts on the front doors clicked simultaneously, engaging a secondary locking mechanism that even federal override codes couldn’t instantly bypass.

Keller spun around, his hand instinctively dropping to his service weapon. "What the hell is this, Whitfield? Did you just lock us inside your own perimeter?"

"I didn't touch anything," I replied, keeping my voice completely steady as I stared past the frosted glass of the sidelights. Outside, the yellow floodlights along the driveway flickered once, twice, and then shifted from a steady amber to a pulsing, deep crimson—the signature alert color of my estate’s independent defense grid.

Vanessa scrambled backward across the marble floor, her expensive designer dress bunched up around her knees, her face drained of all color. "Open the door! Let me out! You're working with them, Daniel! You set this up from the beginning!"

"If I had set this up, Vanessa, you wouldn't be sitting on the floor screaming like a coward," I said, stepping over the threshold and looking down at her with cold detachment. "You would have realized that when you play a game of corporate espionage, you need to know whose servers you're actually tapping into."

Agent Keller’s phone buzzed violently in his palm, the screen flashing with a red encrypted warning banner. He brought it to his ear, his eyes locked on me with a mixture of disbelief and fury. "Keller... report. What do you mean the perimeter is sealed? By whose authority?"

A mechanical hum vibrated through the floorboards as the estate’s primary communication repeater kicked into an isolated loop, cutting off all outside cellular signals except for a designated secure frequency. The audio from Keller's phone didn't connect to his bureau office; instead, a crisp, digitally modulated voice filled the entryway.

"Agent Keller. This is Special Operations Director Hayes, Federal Task Force on Corporate Extortion," the voice announced through the speaker. "You have compromised an active counter-intelligence sting. Stand down immediately and secure all civilian personnel."

Keller’s jaw tightened. He looked down at the phone, then up at me, realizing the terrifying depth of the chessboard we were standing on. "A federal task force? You've got to be kidding me. Who authorized a shadow override on a local bureau arrest?"

"The same people who realized Meridian Holdings wasn't just laundering money through regional freight fronts," a new voice chimed in from the shadow of the hallway archway.

We all turned.

Grace stepped forward from the kitchen threshold. The quiet, submissive housekeeper who had spent two years cleaning up after high-society dinners was gone. In her place stood a woman whose posture was rigid, whose eyes were sharp and calculating, and whose fingers were currently typing commands into a ruggedized military-grade terminal she had pulled from beneath her apron.

Vanessa stopped breathing. "Grace? What... what are you doing?"

Grace didn't look at Vanessa. She looked straight at Keller, tapping a final key on her terminal that caused the crimson floodlights outside to snap back to a brilliant, blinding white.

"My name is Agent Grace Miller, Federal Cyber Intelligence," Grace said, her voice ringing clear and cold through the silent foyer. "And your arrest warrant, Agent Keller, has just been countermanded."
