Chapter 2 - The Impossible Touch

The silence in the room grew so dense that Marina could hear the frantic rhythm of her own pulse drumming in her ears.

She stood frozen beneath Adrien Cole's gaze, her hands pressed tightly against the fabric of her shirt where Noah had begun to root restlessly against her chest, sensing her rising panic. A hot tear slipped down her cheek, completely involuntary, born from the sheer, crushing exhaustion of a life spent running on empty.

"Kill me if you want," Marina whispered, her voice cracking with a fierce, reckless defiance that surprised even her. "Throw me out. Call your men. Do whatever you're going to do to me. But leave my son out of it. He didn't ask to be here."

At the table, one of the lieutenants half-rose from his chair, his face twisting in disgust at her insolence. "Boss, shall I take care of the trash?"

Adrien didn't blink. He didn't break eye contact with Marina. He raised a single finger, and the lieutenant sank back into his seat without another word.

Slowly, deliberately, Adrien raised his right hand.

Marina flinched, her instincts screaming at her to shield Noah, but she was entirely paralyzed. She expected him to grab her, to shove her aside, to pull the baby from her arms with the casual cruelty of a man accustomed to breaking things.

Instead, his large, warm hand hovered inches above the cotton sling. His fingers, long and steady, brushed against the edge of the fabric where Noah’s small, flushed face was pressed.

And then, the impossible happened.

Noah stopped crying.

The high-pitched wail cut off mid-breath, replaced by a soft, confused little hiccup. The tiny infant blinked against the harsh light, turned his head toward Adrien’s hand, and let out a soft, sleepy sigh.

Every man at the table leaned forward, their expressions shifting from irritation to utter disbelief. In the six months of his life, Noah had screamed at doctors, cashiers, landlords, and passing strangers. He hated everyone he didn't know. Yet now, beneath the touch of the city's most feared criminal, he went completely, miraculously still.

Before anyone could process the shift, Noah’s tiny hand shot out from beneath the sling. His miniature fingers wrapped tightly around the lapel of Adrien Cole’s expensive designer jacket, clutching the dark wool in a stubborn, unyielding fist.

Adrien froze.

For the first time all evening, the mask of absolute control slipped. His dark eyes widened fractionally as he looked down at the tiny hand gripping his jacket. He didn't pull away. He stood completely motionless, as if a single sudden movement might shatter whatever invisible spell had just been cast over the room.

"Boss?" the head steward whispered from the doorway, stepping forward as if to intervene.

"Shut the door," Adrien said, his voice strangely raw.

"Sir?"

"I said, shut the door, and get everyone out of my dining room. Now."

The scramble of expensive chairs scraping against wood was instantaneous. Within ten seconds, the room emptied out like a leaking ship, leaving only Adrien, Marina, and the baby who refused to let go of the mafia boss's jacket.
