Chapter 5 - Breach at Midnight

The sharp, staccato pop of a silenced gunshot echoed from somewhere down the distant hallway, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting marble.
"How many?" Adrien demanded, his hand dropping instantly to the holster hidden beneath his suit jacket, drawing a heavy, matte-black Sig Sauer with terrifying efficiency.
"At least six," Sylvio panted, pressing his back against the study doorframe and peering back out into the darkened corridor. "They bypassed the electronic overrides using a military-grade scrambler. They're not local enforcers, Boss. They're professionals."
"Vance’s men," Adrien muttered, a dangerous, razor-thin smile touching his lips. "He couldn't wait until morning to see if the rumor was true."
Marin stood frozen near the edge of the desk, clutching a sleeping Noah tightly against her chest. The word professionals bounced around inside her head like a ricocheting bullet. She wasn't just a broke mother facing eviction anymore; she was standing in the crossfire of a full-scale mafia war, holding the most valuable target in the city.
"You need to leave," Adrien said, not looking at her as he checked the magazine of his pistol.
"Leave? How? They're in the hallways!" Marin cried out, her voice cracking with terror.
"Sylvio, take her through the panic corridor behind the bookcase," Adrien ordered, his eyes locked on the open study doors. "Get them down to the subterranean garage. The black Lincoln is idling in bay three. Do not stop for anything."
"And you?" Sylvio asked, his eyes grim.
"I'm going to welcome our guests," Adrien said coldly.
Before Marin could argue, Sylvio grabbed her arm with surprising gentleness, steering her toward a massive mahogany bookshelf on the far wall of the study. He reached behind a carved wooden scrollwork detail, pressed a hidden latch, and with a low, mechanical whir, the heavy shelves swung inward to reveal a narrow, pitch-black concrete staircase descending into the earth.
"Move, Miss Holtz," Sylvio urged, pushing her gently toward the dark opening.
Marin looked back over her shoulder just as Adrien stepped out into the hallway, raising his weapon into the shadows. The sight of him standing alone against an army of killers sent a cold shiver straight through her heart.
"Wait!" she gasped, pulling back. "He'll be killed!"
"Mr. Cole knows how to survive," Sylvio said grimly, shoving her into the stairwell as the first heavy footsteps pounded against the study door outside. "Run!"
The heavy bookshelf slammed shut behind them, plunging the concrete stairwell into absolute, suffocating darkness. Marin clutched Noah to her chest, his warm, steady breathing the only thing tethering her to reality as she stumbled blindly down the steps into the unknown.

The muffled crack-crack of gunfire erupted from the room above, vibrating through the stone walls, followed by the shattering of glass and the shouts of approaching men.
Marina didn't hesitate anymore. She gripped the cold concrete wall with her free hand and ran down into the dark, racing toward a destination she didn't know, carrying a secret that could get them all killed.
