Chapter 6 - Into the Concrete Abyss

The air inside the hidden stairwell tasted of damp stone, old iron, and stagnant earth.
Marina stumbled blindly down the narrow concrete steps, her hand sliding along the cold, abrasive wall to keep her balance while her other arm tightened around Noah like a vice. Above them, the muffled concussions of gunfire sounded like rolling thunder trapped inside a vault. Each sharp crack made her flinch, but she forced her legs to move faster, descending deeper into the suffocating dark.
Sylvio was right behind her, his footsteps heavy and rhythmic, a reassuring anchor in the pitch-black void.
"Keep going," Sylvio muttered, his voice tense as he paused for a fraction of a second to check the latch of a concealed security panel behind them. "The exit tunnel connects directly to the sub-level utility corridors. If we make it to bay three before they lock down the perimeter grid, we have a chance."
"And Adrien?" Marina gasped out, her lungs burning from the cold, heavy air. "He's up there alone!"
"Mr. Cole is never alone, Miss Holtz," Sylvio replied sharply, though there was a tight, strained edge to his words that betrayed his own fear. "Your focus is the child. That is the only order that matters right now."
A sudden, sharp metallic ping echoed from the hidden door they had just left behind, followed by the dull, tearing sound of a mechanical lock being drilled out from the study side.
They were already in the walls.
"Move!" Sylvio urged, grabbing her elbow and steering her sharply around a slick concrete corner.
A faint, sickly amber glow appeared ahead of them, illuminating the damp floor with long, distorted shadows. They burst out of the narrow stairwell into the sub-level utility corridor—a maze of rusted water pipes, exposed electrical conduit, and massive HVAC ductwork that hummed with a low, vibrating drone.
Marina’s sneakers slapped frantically against the concrete. In her arms, Noah stirred, letting out a confused, sleepy whimper against her chest. She pressed her face down into his soft hair, whispering frantic, silent prayers that he wouldn't start screaming. A single cry in these hollow concrete caverns would act like a beacon for whoever was hunting them.
Sylvio drew his pistol back into a ready low-ready position, his eyes darting down the intersecting corridors. "This way. Bay three is past the transformer room."
They rounded another corner, the heavy smell of exhaust fumes and motor oil suddenly hitting Marina’s senses. They were close to the garage. But as they approached the wide steel fire door leading into bay three, the overhead utility lights flickered twice and died completely, plunging the entire garage into pitch-black shadow, pierced only by the red emergency backup strobes high on the walls.

And standing right in front of the black Lincoln Navigator, blocking their only path to escape, were two figures in tactical gear.
