Chapter 6 - The Retaliation Clause

“Insurance fraud? Medical negligence?” The words tasted like ash on my tongue, sharp and toxic, cutting through the heavy post-surgical exhaustion that weighed down every bone in my body.

Beside me, Daniel’s posture shifted instantly. The gentle, grieving father dissolved, replaced by a cold, calculating corporate force. His eyes narrowed as he looked from the security guard to the two police officers standing quietly in the hallway.

“What grounds is he claiming for negligence?” Daniel asked, his voice low and steady, carrying an authority that made the guard instinctively check his clipboard.

“He’s alleging that Dr. Cruz abandoned a scheduled private contract under false pretenses,” the guard explained, shifting uncomfortably under Daniel’s gaze. “He brought a legal affidavit signed by a hospital administrator claiming Valentina’s emergency status was exaggerated to cover a personal scheduling conflict.”

A cold fury flared in my chest. Alejandro hadn't just humiliated me at the altar and defended his mother’s viciousness in the parking lot; now he was trying to destroy my license, my livelihood, and my reputation because I had dared to walk away from his pathetic circus.

“That’s completely absurd,” I said, stepping past the guard. “Valentina’s medical charts, pre-op scans, and emergency admission logs are logged into the system. The board can review every single second of her trauma timeline.”

“They already are,” one of the police officers spoke up, stepping forward with a calm, professional demeanor. “Mr. Torres arrived with legal representation from his family’s firm. They’ve requested an immediate administrative review and a formal questioning session down at the precinct, or right here in the hospital boardroom if the board permits.”

I opened my mouth to demand they throw him out, but Daniel beat me to it.

“Tell Mr. Torres and his legal team that the hospital boardroom is currently occupied by individuals who actually contribute to society,” Daniel said, his dark eyes locked onto the officers. “And tell them that if they take one step onto the fourth-floor ICU wing while my daughter is recovering, my lawyers will hit them with a retaliatory countersuit for harassment, defamation, and malicious prosecution that will strip the Torres family of every remaining asset they think they own.”

The officers exchanged glances. The weight of Daniel’s name, combined with the terrifying legal reality of threatening a high-profile real estate tycoon’s counter-offensive, clearly gave them pause.

“We’ll inform Mr. Torres of your position, sir,” the senior officer said, tipping his cap. “Though an official inquiry from the medical board may still require Dr. Cruz’s formal statement by tomorrow morning.”

“Let them call,” I said, my spine straightening as a fierce, unyielding resolve took hold of me. “I have nothing to hide.”

As the officers and the security guard turned and retreated down the corridor, I let out a long, shuddering breath, turning to face Daniel.

“You didn't have to back them into a corner like that,” I murmured, exhaustion creeping back into my voice.

“Mariana, you saved my daughter’s life twice in less than twenty-four hours,” Daniel said, his voice softening as he stepped closer, gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead. “Do you honestly think I’m going to sit back and let some pathetic, insecure ex-fiancé drag you through the mud just because his ego couldn't handle being second choice to a dying child?”

Before I could answer, my phone buzzed in my coat pocket. It was an email notification from the San Gabriel Hospital Ethics Committee: Urgent Notice: Formal Inquiry Request Filed by Alejandro Torres regarding Surgical Triage Protocols.
