Chapter 8 - The Collapsing Foundation

“Mr. Herrera,” the committee chair stammered, adjusting his glasses nervously. “This is a closed medical hearing. You have no standing—”

“I have every standing, Dr. Sterling,” Daniel interrupted smoothly, stepping up to the edge of the table and placing a crisp, official document right on top of Alejandro’s grievance papers. “I am Daniel Herrera. My daughter, Valentina, is the patient Dr. Cruz saved while this individual was busy crying over his ruined wedding reception. Furthermore, my holding firm happens to be the primary institutional lienholder on three major commercial developments currently owned by the Torres family.”

Alejandro’s attorney grabbed the document Daniel had dropped, his eyes scanning the first two paragraphs before his face lost all color.

“This... this is an immediate loan acceleration notice,” the lawyer whispered, looking up at Daniel in sheer horror. “You can’t do this. There’s a ninety-day grace period—”

“Not when fraud and malicious harassment are tied to corporate solvency violations,” Daniel replied, his tone as cold as winter ice. He turned his dark eyes directly toward Alejandro, who was now shaking in his designer shoes. “Your family built its entire reputation on stepping on people, Alejandro. You thought you could come into a hospital, harass the surgeon who saved my daughter, and file fraudulent administrative complaints to protect your bruised ego? You just signed your family’s financial death warrant.”

Silence descended over the boardroom—a suffocating, heavy silence broken only by the hum of the overhead ventilation system.

Dr. Sterling cleared his throat, pulling the medical grievance folder back toward himself and deliberately sliding it into the shredder bin beside his chair.

“The ethics committee finds the complaint entirely baseless, malicious, and unsupported by medical evidence,” Dr. Sterling announced firmly, closing the folder with a sharp snap. “Dr. Cruz acted with exemplary professionalism and life-saving urgency. Case closed. Mr. Torres, you and your counsel are requested to leave the premises immediately, or I will have security escort you off hospital property.”

Alejandro stood up abruptly, his chair screeching against the floor. He looked at me across the table, his eyes wide with a mixture of raw terror, humiliation, and desperate disbelief.

“Mariana,” Alejandro choked out, his voice cracking pathetically. “Please. Tell him to stop. We were together for two years. You can’t let him destroy everything my family has—”

“You destroyed it yourself, Alejandro the moment you traded me for Fernanda and decided my career was an inconvenience,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion. “Get out of my hospital.”

Without another word, Alejandro turned and bolted out of the boardroom, his attorney scrambling frantically to gather his papers and chase after him.

As the heavy doors closed behind them, Dr. Morales let out a long sigh, leaning back in his chair and offering me a tired, grateful smile. “Well handled, Dr. Cruz. Now go get some sleep. You’ve earned it.”
