Chapter 10 - The Mastermind Behind the Veil

The silence in the conference room grew so heavy I could hear the distant, muted hum of the city traffic thirty floors below.
“A hostile takeover,” I repeated, the pieces slowly clicking together in my mind, forming a picture far larger and more sinister than Daniel’s pathetic gambling debts. “Daniel didn't dream up Veloce Holdings on his own. Someone coached him. Someone guided him into those bad loans, engineered his failures, and set him up to take the fall.”
“Give the woman a prize,” Julian Vance said smoothly, leaning back in his leather chair. “Daniel was a weak link, easily manipulated by the promise of corporate status and a woman who knew how to stroke his fragile ego. Vanessa Cole wasn't just an ambitious CEO he met at a convention, Mrs. Foster. She was placed in his orbit eighteen months ago by our senior partners specifically to groom him for this exact extraction.”
A cold fury washed over me, burning away any residual shock. They hadn't just destroyed my marriage; they had treated my family’s legacy like a harvested crop, using my husband as a farmhand to deliver it to their doorstep.
“And what makes you think you can walk out of this room with my father’s company after I hand this entire conspiracy over to the federal prosecutor’s office?” I asked, my voice as steady as steel.
Vance chuckled softly, reaching into his suit jacket to pull out a pristine white envelope, sliding it across the granite table toward me.
“Because, Mrs. Foster, the federal prosecutor’s office already has a file on your husband’s financial crimes—a file that conveniently implicates you as a silent, benefiting partner who signed off on corporate tax shelters two years ago to minimize your capital gains.”
My breath hitched. I reached out, picked up the envelope, and pulled out a single sheet of paper inside.
May you like
It was an IRS audit document from eighteen months ago, bearing my signature—a genuine signature I had signed on a routine tax compliance form that Daniel had slipped into a stack of household insurance papers without my knowledge.
“If you go to the authorities,” Vance whispered, his pale blue eyes locking onto mine with lethal precision, “you don't just put Daniel away. You join him in the dock for corporate fraud. Now... shall we discuss the terms of your voluntary asset transfer, or would you prefer a prison cell?”
