Chapter 8 - The Morning After

The morning sun broke over the Boston suburbs with a pale, deceptive warmth, casting long, stark shadows across the kitchen counter where I stood pouring black coffee into a heavy ceramic mug.

The house was empty. Daniel was being held without bail at the Suffolk County detention center awaiting arraignment, and Rachel had been picked up by state troopers outside a motel in Providence three hours before dawn.

Ashley was still resting comfortably at Massachusetts General, her recovery monitored by a private security detail Detective Harris had discreetly arranged.

My phone sat on the kitchen island, its screen dark, mocking me with the memory of the midnight call.

Ten o'clock. Downtown Boston.

I hadn't told Detective Harris about the threat. I knew if I did, the police would surround the meeting location with cruisers and tactical units, turning a delicate negotiation into an open war zone where my family’s estate would inevitably become collateral damage in a protracted federal investigation. Some doors had to be opened alone.

At 9:15 a.m., I walked out to my car, slid behind the wheel, and tossed a heavy leather folio onto the passenger seat—the original corporate bylaws and trust charters my father had drafted twenty years ago, carrying the authentic, unforgeable legal protections Daniel never knew existed.

The drive into the city was quiet, the autumn traffic moving with the monotonous rhythm of ordinary life, completely unaware of the subterranean wars fighting for survival beneath its surface.

When I pulled up to the designated address—a sleek, modernist glass-and-steel high-rise near the financial district—the doorman held the glass door open with polite, mechanical indifference.

I rode the elevator to the thirty-second floor, stepping out into a minimalist reception area where the walls were panelled in dark walnut and the air smelled of expensive cologne and ozone.

A receptionist with hair pulled back into a severe bun looked up from her desk. “Mrs. Foster? They’re expecting you in Conference Room B.”
