Chapter 6 - The Footsteps in the Mud

The heavy front door swung wider as Daniel’s frantic footsteps echoed down the back hallway, his weight slamming against the pantry door before the kitchen exit rattled violently under his desperate tug.

Detective Harris didn't flinch. He stepped across the threshold with the practiced authority of a veteran cop, his hand resting calmly on his holster.

“Officers, cover the rear perimeter,” Harris commanded, his voice sharp and steady.

The two uniformed patrolmen spun on their heels, sprinting off the porch and splashing through the wet grass toward the side yard before Daniel could even clear the back deck.

I stood in the center of the foyer, my arms crossed tightly over my chest, watching the panic unfold in a house that had once felt like a sanctuary. Every board creaked under the weight of a decade’s worth of deceit, now stripped bare by the cold light of accountability.

“He won’t get far, Mrs. Foster,” Harris said, turning his gaze back to me, his eyes softening with professional sympathy. “The property line is sealed. Let’s stay inside where it’s safe.”

Outside, the sharp, authoritative beam of a high-powered tactical flashlight cut through the kitchen window, sweeping across the drywall like a laser. A muffled shout broke the crisp night air from the backyard—the sound of gravel crunching under heavy boots, followed immediately by a sharp command to halt.

“Don’t move! Boston Police! Stay right where you are!”

I closed my eyes for a fraction of a second, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like the first clean oxygen I had drawn into my lungs in days. The man I had shared a bed with, the man who had kissed my cheek while planning our daughter’s quiet execution, was finally running out of real estate.

But as the heavy thud of a body hitting the wooden deck outside signaled the end of Daniel’s escape, a sudden, piercing chime cut through the silence.

It wasn't the front doorbell.

It was my own cell phone, vibrating violently against the marble foyer table, flashing an unknown, restricted caller ID with a New York area code.
